Motor racing Grand Prix style.

It’s the start of the 2019 Grand Prix / GP motor racing season for both bikes and cars.

The motorcycles (normally) have 3 (televised) Grand Prix races at each venue, one for each of the formulae (the formulae being similar to the cars with Formula 1, Formula 2 etc).

Checking out the gap of the opening race at Qatar across the finish line between 1st and 2nd for each race makes for interesting reading, and exciting racing. Moto3 – 0.05sec, Moto2 – 0.03sec, MotoGP – 0.02sec.
If you don’t get BTSport, highlights appear to be shown on Quest, for the Qatar race it was the following day.

Its the turn of the four-wheelers on Sunday.

Enjoy...........

Find it, fix it, drive it.

Sun 21st April 2019

More4 08.55

As I quite like old British drag/sprint bikes, I thought I'd mention this prog.

There’s a chance to see a 500cc blown Triumph sprint / drag bike on the TV on Sunday (21st) morning starting at 08.55 on More4, so set up the Betamax if you want to record it. (ps it may well finish a couple minutes later than scheduled)

The programme takes an old 1960’s ambulance, then converts & paints it so it’ll haul the bike, in period style, to Elvington where the bike is run on the airfield (the bike part is predominantly the last 15 minutes ish).

Interesting to hear the comment/statement about Elvington as “ this is the Mecca mate, the birthplace of English land speed”.

Me thinks what happened at Blackpool, Brooklands and Saltburn/Southport in the early part of the 20th century just might question the birthplace thing.....................

I shall refrain from further comment  Roll Eyes

I watched "The Highway Men" last night on Netflix, (at Archie's house -I don't own a TV).
The story of Bonnie & Clyde's demise told from the lawmen's point of view & starring Kevin Costner & Woody Harrelson. Very good. Great scenes of depression era America, good portrayals of the 2 aging Texas Rangers tracking their foe across the country & lots of gorgeous 30s cars.

When I flew to Japan recently, I watched Green Book on the plane. The true story of an Italian American from the Bronx, hired to drive a black jazz pianist to a series of concerts across the Deep South in the 60s.
Again, beautiful footage of period America & a great story of the growing friendship between 2 completely different characters as they travel in a rented Cadillac.

Fantomworks a new series starts.

Thursday 16th May - 10pm

Quest

For those that haven’t seen it, its about an American company that takes classic/old cars and (usually) does a huge amount of work to make the car how the customer wants it, with no corner-cutting, and often a resume of coat of parts and labour.

Goodwood Revival. (from previous weekend’s event)

Thurs 19th September 2019

ITV4 8pm

Fri 20th September 2019

ITV4 9pm

The annual Goodwood Revival in Sussex is a 3-day event and features historic-vehicle motor racing on a circuit that basically remains un-changed  (bar the odd gravel trap or run-off) since its closure in 1966.

All the competition cars and bikes are of the era when the circuit was open.

In addition, all vehicles within the circuit boundary (with the exception of safety related vehicles) such as breakdown trucks, ice cream vans and pace cars are all period, even the marshals get taken to their stations by period bus.

Tickets (for the Sat & Sun) sell out way in advance as this is considered a world-class event with a huge array of famous drivers from the past attending, many racing alongside some of today’s drivers. (at time of posting, Wed 11th, some Friday tickets are still available!)

Its also worth noting that the 'races' are races, not parades, and the vehicles are originals, some with fantastic history being given the beans good 'n' proper.

There are parades as well, this year they include the Stirling Moss parade, D-Day parade, Cooper Car parade and 1959 TT parade.

The paying public, along with mechanics and officials tend to dress in clothing reminiscent of the era too, which may sound a bit naff, but it fits in brilliantly with the event.

Oh, and how many motor racing events can you turn up to and they have a 10 minute air display at about 08.15 (usually with a Spitfire - well, it was an RAF airfield during WW2............) and around 7pm when the track closes.

Here’s a music prog about an eccentric chap known as Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure, (the one, the only) John Otway. The prog is a film, funded by fans, and simply called Otway The Movie.

Its scheduled to be on London Live – Wed 2nd October 22.15

“London Live”.TV Channel. The Web says “Watch on Freeview 8, Sky 117, Virgin 159 and YouView 8 or stream online. http://londonlive.co.uk

Folk of a certain age (prob over 50!! ouch) may remember seeing a track called “Cor Baby, That’s Really Free” by John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett from 1977 which (bearing in mind there was no internet or social media) was broadcast on the Old Grey Whistle Test (presented by whispering Bob Harris) and Top Of The Pops.
The success of Cor Baby allowed John to be known as a One Hit Wonder................

In 1999, the BBC held a poll as part of National Poetry Day to find the nation’s favourite song lyrics. The results include songs by the Beatles, Queen, John Lennon, and (you’ve guessed it) John Otway with “Beware of the Flowers cos I’m Sure They’re Gonna Get You, Yeah”

Here’s that great old sing-along: Beware of the Flowers..............

John had a dream for second hit, and the movie tells the story of how he decided to let his fans select a song from a selection, and the fan-based strategy adopted to try and make the top 20. Its a bit of under-dog vs the establishment.
The second hit was (as you all know – ahem!!) Bunsen Burner, and John returned to the Top of the Pops studio.

I saw him a few years ago at The Brook in Southampton with Wilko Johnson, the Hamsters & Norm, the bass player from the Blockheads.
He was absolutely superb.
