Thank you - but we can't take any of the credit yet. All we've done is pay for it. The guys at JC Refinishing, & in particular, Andy the bloke who's working on our car, deserves it all. We've drawn up what we hope is our final body panel shopping list. Just waiting for confirmation of prices & shipping costs from the States then we'll wire the money over.
We bumped into one of JC's crew at a local classic car show at the weekend, showing his own Mustang. He told us the floor panel's now in position in Taz's car, awaiting trimming & welding. Must've been a bugger to slot an entire one piece floor pan through the windows & drop it into place.
Meanwhile Taz used the company tractor to hoist the ex Pinball Wizard Charger engine onto it's stand today. Once securely bolted to it, she set about checking it over. I freely admit I'm no mechanic -I know what goes on inside a motor but I'm no good at fault finding or measuring wear & tear on components. We could really do with someone who knows what they're looking at to come & take a look.

We span the engine round on the stand & peered inside the sump.

The sump itself is odd. Capacity has been increased by welding in a 2 inch wide strip to the deepest part. There are also home made baffle plates. The actual sump shape is slightly different to our other Charger motor. Can anyone identify just what we have here?

Rather worringly, the filter on the oil pick up tube contained several pieces of ...plastic we think. Not magnetic anyway & didn't feel like aluminium. The valve stem oil seals perhaps? I know the Reliant ones are black rubber & harden with heat, becoming brittle & sometimes breaking up to work their way down into the sump.

We pulled off one of the crankshaft end caps. No signs of wear through the top coating & although a few small scores in the surface, nothing I would consider worth worrying about.
Lousy picture of the crank cos the light was fading, but no signs of major wear there either.
Opinions anyone?

Hopefully. Taz posted these pics on the Mopar Muscle Association forum. General consensus of opinion was that the modified sump is from the larger 440ci motor & has been "banded" for extra oil capacity. A common mod apparently, although deep pan sumps are now available as aftermarket parts. It was also pointed out that although the sump has been deepened, the oil pick-up tube hasn't been lengthened by the same amount. The standard sump is considered fine for normal use, so I reckon we should just tart up the one from the original engine.

Thank you for the encouragement Frederick.  Smiley
Paid our weekly visit to the workshops today, stopping off at the bank on the way to sort out the wire transfer of the money for the next shipment of panels from Jack's Auto Parts in New Jersey. Everything will be on it's way next week, except the door jamb pillars, (B posts), which will be sent a week or two later. The next lot includes an entire roof skin & a bonnet -that's gonna be one hell of a big cardboard box!

Andy, the guy who's handling our car, is very happy with all the AMD, (Auto Metal Direct), panels they've received, with the exception of the sill, (rocker panel), which came from a different supplier, Shermans. It wasn't up to his standards, being just a flimsy over-sill really, so he made the decision to make his own from scratch. Now it's the strongest part of the car. Took a lot of work to produce all the folds & curves. Very nice.
