To Register Your Trike

This may sound an odd thing to consider before you have chosen to build your trike.
But decisions at this stage will determine the final outcome.
The m.s.v.a’s responsibility for registering you pride and joy have a set rules on which there are 3 options open to a private builder.

 
Option 1 - If you build your trike utilising a selection of second hand parts from a variety of donor vehicles your trike will be assigned a ‘Q’ plated registration. This signifies the trike is of in determination origin i.e. It has not been created from a single donor or made from brand new comports once a ‘Q’ plate has been assigned it CANNOT be transferred.

Option 2 - A current registration mark i.e. ‘58’ plate. This is only possible if you can prove that your trike is made from 100% brand new components. Currently there is 1 relaxation under this ruling for amateur builders. 1 major component is allowed to be reconditioned to an as new condition. Such a registration mark can be replaced by a private plate, providing the trike is not made to look younger (or newer). This is the same rules for production of a brand new car.

Option 3 - If your trike has been built using a pre determine number of major components from 1 vehicle. I.e. the donor vehicle. The registration assigned will be the same prefixed as that donor vehicle. For example if you build a trike using a set number of major components from a reliant on a ‘H’ plate your trike will also be assigned an ‘H’ plate. Again this can be changed to a private number plate providing the trike is NOT made to look younger.

Now you see the importance of where and how you obtain the components to build your trike. It is now pretty clear why keeping good records during a trike build is imperative, with this in mind purchase a very large ring binder and from day one, use it as a depository for everything to do with your project
I.e. Receipts, Technical data, photographs (to prove you are the builder).

In fact EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF PAPER YOU RECEIVE DURING THE BUILD. It will increase the desirability and registration of your trike.

Should you ever decide to sell it will increase your ability to sell easily as all this will show the prospective buyer how organised the build was.

wright just pulled the mag out. front cover missing..   but i think it was a trike kit and car kit magazine. it was called the best trike and car build mag ever. or something like that.not sure though memory like siv... and i wouldn't now if it applied to bikes as well just copied wot it says in the magazine hope this answers all your questions......

Option 3 should have something in it about NOT altering the structure of the parts used ie:- you cant hack the chassis into bits or weld anything onto it as then it is not standard and dont qualify for the points. No original unmolested chassis, No original number. This is why there are so many "Ringer" trikes out there that are in fact illegaly running about on Reliant log books. Now the MOT is live on computer there are lots getting refused MOT's. Have a look on ebay at the amount of "Reliant" trikes for sale cheap.

Excellent article Haggis!

The thing I often notice in trike adverts is they say "Properly registered - not a Q plate" - when in fact if it's properly registered it WILL have a Q plate - relevant to what you said about being illegal if they're running as a Reliant.

This still seems to cause a lot of confusion as a lot of people are led to believe that if it is on a Q plate there's something wrong with it, which is of course the exact opposite of the truth!
