Taz has been working today but it was my day off so I took myself off to the Winter classic bike autojumble at Kempton Park race course, on the outskirts of London. Only a half hour drive from home.
As it always seems to be at Kempton, it was bitterly cold with a biting wind cutting down the aisles between the stalls. In spite of the current recession, or maybe because of it, business seemed to be brisk, with everyone weighed down by bargains bought from one pitch as they foraged through piles of parts on the next. The MetalMan seemed busiest -a queue of middle-aged bike builders, clutching various off cuts of steel, aluminium & brass, snaked all the way around his stall & across the walkway outside. I joined them & bought a six inch square of 1/4 inch aluminium for my Ford Pop project for a very reasonable £1.70
I momentarily bumped into Chevy Rick as he appeared out of the crowd & glimpsed Dave & Janie among the sea of Belstaff jackets & woolly hats, but otherwise I was free to wander around on my own, picking up odds & ends for various projects & inspecting all manner of stuff I had no possible use for, but which looked interesting anyway. I thought I'd been quite restrained in my rusty old tat buying, but still seem to have come home laden down with it all.
Some interesting bikes in the carpark, though obviously not as many as attend the jumbles held in warmer months. The January meet is the time to gather up all those detail parts needed to finish that project in the shed, ready for the Summer.
A very successful foraging trip.

My hoard of jumbly stuff:

a 6" long polished bellmouth for the carb on Taz's trike.
a solid aluminium luggage rack, hand made for a Kwacka Eliminator, also for Taz's trike -maybe.
a mesh headlight stone guard, to try on Taz's trike.
several cables, to rob for their rubber sleeves & the angled throttle cable guide, for my own trike.
2 10 metre lengths of braided nylon sleeving for the wiring on both trikes.
a chunk of aluminium plate, for CNC machining into a gear selector cover for my Pop.
a pair of circular mini indicators as side repeaters on my Pop.
a couple of bags of ball bearings for the steering box on my Pop.
a fresh box of latex workshop gloves.
2 dozen angle grinder cutting discs & half a dozen flap wheels.
2 resin skulls as presents for Loony, maybe as gear knobs for future projects.

Yeah, I could've bought a chunk 2 foot square but thought what the hell would I do with it, plus I'd have to carry it round with me all day, so just stuck with what I actually needed.
