has anyone shortened an axle? if so can you tell me the thickness of the tube? it going to be the deciding factor of how wide my frames going to be. im after that wide look without any frame showing if you get what i mean. difficult to explain what im building. i made a mock up today and it looks spot on! really depends on the axle tubes now as to working or not.  |

Mr M had a hand in shortening Taz`s axle on thier current build but it depends how much notice he was taking  . Morrag has also done one so may be best to wait for him. |

Yeah, better wait for the professionals! The axle tubes are about 3mm thick I think. I had a couple of spares, but posted them to ScouseMouse last week! I'll PM him & ask him to measure them for you.

The last three axles I have chopped, 2 for me and one for a mate, have all been,50mm o/d,45mm bore, for a nom. wall thickness of 2.5mm, manufactured from seamed m/s tube, and I favour 'cutting and sleeving', rather than removing the tubes from the diff. housing, due to the risk of damage to the housing when reasembling shortened tubes into the diff. casing, anyway, it works for me, if bothered about strength weld a reinforcing rib to the back of the tubes once shortened, or extended, cheers for now, Morrag

thanks morrag. now my alcohol fuzzled brain is clear i might be able to explain a bit better what im tryig to achieve i want to keep the frame width the same as the bikes frame. im planning to put the axle mounts either side of the diff to keep it looking narrow but wide if you can picture what im on about? but i was worrying as to wether it would bend the tubes with the amount of unsupported axle but i think i,ve found a way round it now. so i,ll post some pics later if i manage to get anything done after todays domestic duties |

Hi Toad,
I built my silver one with parallel frame rails, I was a bit concerned about the leverage against the diff but it seemed fine. I considered a back brace incorporating the mounts but for some reason didn't do it, got distracted by something shiney maybe ?

Anyway, the practice of fixing Reliant axles to the wall of your workshop is a traditional New Year activity in Wales, with its origins lost in the midst of time, and, and, and,.......next time I'll turn the bloody picture through 90,degrees, I bet William Wallace, or even Mel Gibson never had to put up with this degree of......., next time! Yeah, right, its all very well that the axle is the right way up, but what about my workshop's wall, I went out there this morning and it's fallen over!!who is going to rebuild that? tinkering, look where it gets you......
