Hello

I know that you're meant to notify the DVLA and have your V5 details changed accordingly (new engine size and engine number) if you change the engine, but I had also heard recently that you will need the car inspected after making such changes. Is this currently the case, or is it something that is going to happen?

Regards

Luke

I recently had an engine change to my Austin Maestro and just notified them, no inspection needed.

Hiya,
I've heard reports of people fitting smaller engines, or at least claiming to, to avoid paying higher road tax, then receiving letters from DVLA asking for proof in the form of a letter from the garage that did the work. Fitting a larger engine doesn't seem to attract the same attention -I guess because they'll make more money out of you in road tax.

That's nice -a proper ol' school chopper.  Smiley Haven't seen the name "Tribsa" used since I was a teenager.
Don't suppose you've got enough pics to make up a feature in the Motors section?
It used to be very easy to swap details around like that, but things are tightening up now & more sophisticated computers are making it harder & harder to sneak stuff through the system.

I put a new engine on my bike the other week after the old one packed up completely, I was unsure what I needed to do document wise so I called the DVLA up and spoke to a friendly lady who told me that all I needed to do was to send the V5C back to them with the new engine number and size and they would issue a new one to replace it with the ammended details.

I dont think that i would have enough photo's for a feature MM.
I built it in 1989,using a 1954 Speed Twin engine, bought as a ready to bolt in unit, with gearbox, front and rear engine plates etc for £50,which ran perfectly, once a new carb was fitted.
The rear part of the frame was extended 4",and the headstock, top tube and front down tube from a unit BSA 650 were grafted on to the existing Triumph engine cradle.6" extended fork tubes fitted into later model Triumph/BSA lowers, with TLS brake.I bought a pair of Headlights from an autojumble that were originally from a tractor of some description, fitted one,(and still have the other,if anybody wants it),and fitted a lens from a Honda CD 175 into it.The switchgear, levers, handlebars, and tail light also came from the same CD 175.Speedo came from a D1 BSA Bantam, stainless rear guard and Triumph front, unknown rigid type toolbox.
New parts fitted were,alternator,seat/vintage style pillion pad, springs, downpipes (un-baffled,with car exhaust trims) AMAL Concentric carb/air filter, coil,Honda CD 175 throttle cable, and a new remote in-line oli filter fitted where a dynamo would have been.Re-wired and converted to 12v.
It was painted with Smoothrite, left for weeks, and cut back and polished,(preperation is everything)
The bike was built in the kitchen, was used as daily transport for 2 years, then swapped for a BSA B33 and a Cossack. Here's a few more pics, and a pic of the B33.

Stevie.
