History of Halloween.
Halloween has been celebrated for centuries. It's roots are in the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain (pronounced 'sow wan') which means 'summer's end'. The end of the Celtic year started at sundown on October 31st and ended at sundown on November 1st. It was a night to remember deceased loved ones because the veil between their realm and ours was believed to be at its thinnest on that night.
Glowing jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were put on window ledges to welcome deceased loved ones and to ward off malevolent spirits. Originally glowing lumps of coal were used to light them from the inside before candles were used.
When European settlers, particularly the Irish, arrived in American they found the native pumpkin to be larger and easier to carve and so the tradition of jack-o-lanterns continued.
Pumpkins are not a vegetable - they are actually a fruit. Like gourds and other varieties of squash they are all members of the Cucurbitacae family, which also includes cucumbers, gherkins and melons.

I'm not happy either. Last night one of my cats - the one that's already nervous - came in the cat flap about 100 miles an hour and shot straight upstairs, seconds later there was a bang on the door and when I looked out a pumpkin had been thrown at the door and landed exactly in the area of the catflap - obviously they chased the cat then threw someone's pumpkin at her.
I saw them, three of them, not little kids but teenagers about 13-15 years. Trouble is there's very little you can do - but next year I'll be waiting with a big bucket of icy water. They can do me for assault if they like, I don't care!
Think I will report the incident to the police just so it's recorded. Tricks are one thing but cruelty to animals is entirely another (as is criminal damage in post above).

great, im not the only old git on here, when i was at the flat i let the dog(large german sheppard) out the door, ive never seen teenagers moved so fast. last year we had a knock on the door and janie ansewered and politely said no thank you, one oik started shouting abuse but soon disapeared as i chased him down the road. (note to oneself, get another dog, im getting too old to run down roads. )yes im the origonal grumpy old git.  |

 Grumpy Old Gits R Us! Fortunately I live in a first floor flat so don't get bothered by the nasty little ...darlings. Since when did Trick or Treat become a British tradition then? Since the shops decided to cash in on it, or since the numpties saw it on American TV shows & copied what they saw, or since the greedy little ...darlings, decided it's a great way to grab something for nothing & be even more obnoxious than usual?
