Love the red oxide pick up. A rear engined pickup strikes me as a little impractical, but, hey, since when was rodding practical!

Mudguards aren't necessary for a British MOT. The test only checks the vehicle's mechanically sound & safe to use on the road. The Construction & Use regulations however, & the SVA for cars & MSVA for bikes, state you must have adequate protection against spray etc, although I've yet to find any written regs on exactly what constitutes "adequate". If you're out on a gloriously sunny, dry day, then presumably none is adequate?
A lot of chops run with no front guard, loads of trikes have no rear guards & plenty of rods don't bother with 'em at all. When we took Flap's orange Reliant trike, (see the Motors, 3 Wheels section of the main site), for the MOT, the tester actually rang the Ministry for advice & was told if they're not fitted they can't be tested & it's not a failable item.
It's up to you - it'll get through the test, but if you're pulled over on the road without them it'll cost you 3 points for each missing guard & a fine, though I don't know anyone who's actually been nicked like that.
Of course, probably most of those Volks rods are American, so who knows what regs they have to comply with.

Yup.
Flap's just left the Post Office & got himself a lorry driving job, so can't afford points on his licence, which is why he's working on mudguards for his trike now.
As far as trikes are concerned though, most traffic cops don't seem too sure of the regs -maybe they just assume if you're out there riding it, it must be legal.

Most of the volksrods over here run small cycle style mudgaurds. Some of the guys on volksrods.co.uk have been given a good bollocking or got points for running fenderless over here!  Black bug with the satin louvered bonnett was, I think, the first and I think one of the best. I like volksrods because its all new, not really been done before, and its cheap. No paying £2500 for a rusty body to start with. Mine cost me £400 on the road! Still not really accepted by the hot rod crowd, but they are coming round to the idea. Hey, if it gets more people started in rodding its a good thing! |
