Hi guys, I'm going to use a bottle as a fuel tank for the mini trike.
I made sure the tank was empty and then removed the valve, let it stand for 24 hous to finish 'out gassing'. Going to cut off the base and the valve protector at the top, fit a filler neck and fuel filler and fit an outlet. Going to mount it on its side.
I'll post a pic or two when I've finished cutting and grinding.
A question: Will I need to cut it in half and fit baffles or will it be okay with out them?
Thanks
K

Hiya K, My brother Brock, the drag racer, would probably be the one to ask, but he's away at a show this weekend. Many years ago I had an old Moggy Minor pick up truck with a stainless beer barrel as the fuel tank mounted behind the cab in the pick up bed. Didn't have any anti-slosh baffles & ran fine as long as I kept it over half full. Below that you could really notice the engine running erratically. Not sure of the cause but it was noticable.
Your tank would make a nice little techy article for the site if you fancy writing it up for us & taking some explanatary piccies along the way.  Wink

Isn't it going to be rather heavy?   Where's it going?

HI BG, its going on the back of my mini trike. Thats mini as in thge car not mini as in small Grin It's a 1000cc automatic engine sub frame and running gear. So should be ok.
Thanks to MM for the reply, perhaps you could ask brock when he gets back. In the meantime I'll start cutting and grinding and taking piccy's for a write up.

Hi guys, well the tank is cut ready for fitting out, but how many baffles should I fit? Can anyone help on this one? I'm thinking 3 or 4.

my first one had a long tank across the rear, made from an off cut of 6" steel pile sleeve. I got hold of some perforated ali sheet from somewhere and made three discs up, stacked them together and drilled three 7mm holes around the edge, cut three lengths of 6mm studding to just short of the tank length and pinched the discs in place with nuts either side, and slid the whole assembly into the tank before welding the second end on. I just spaced them out equally, but that meant that the centre one was below the filler meaning I couldn't put the pump nozzle fully in, a smarter fella would have thought it through first. Being only 6" tube I wasn't too worried about for and aft movement, just sideways, for a calor tank maybe add a section length ways, just fold the ends at 90 degrees and pop rivet to the discs, assuming it's a small bottle ( 17 KG ? ) I would have thought two discs would be plenty and B&Q or your local builders merchant for a sheet of exmet or similar. Option two , Merlin Motorsport sell open cell foam for just that job, no idea of cost though.

Hi guys, have cut the baffles so they are ready to weld together. I need a little more info if anyone can help me out..please.
1)The fuel filler, can I just go to the scrappy and get one and weld it on the tank, I know that I will have to make a hole as well Grin Grin or do I have to get a special filler tube.
2) The vent, how do I sort that one out? Does it have to have the vent connected to something, or does it need a vent at all other than through the filler cap?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Regards

I just cut the whole filler neck out of an old Honda tank that happened to be laying around and welded it on to the new tank ( bearing in mind that we are talking about applying some sort of heat to a used petrol tank ! ) I didn't allow any breather other than the one in the cap and never had any problems that I remember, or at least not with that side of it.

hiya  JUST A WORD OF WARNING FOR ALL any body using an old gas cylinder be carefull  1st unscrew the filler/outlet and let it vent for a few days    2nd turn it upside down and leave it to drain for a week( petroliume gas is heavier then air)  3rd stand upright and fill with water  NOW it SHOULD be safe to start work on  ( i know these facts  from practical expeirience)                       ALSO PLEASE TAKE NOTE IT IS ILLEGALL  TO USE A GAS CYLINDER   as thay are property of the gas surppier  and some treat unaurtherised use as theft    so make shure thier are no markings on it    hope this helps    mike

Thanks Brock, I'll just nip down the local scrappy and get a filler from a suitable car, then I can get on with my tank. Grin It's been hanging around long enough. The baffles are ready to go in but I won't fit them till i've put the filler neck in. Grin
Thank you spanners for the words of advice and warning. There will be no markings left when I've finished, not that I'd do anything illegal Shocked Shocked
