Just seeing if anyone's here. Actually it started as a rambling post about how awful the seat is on my XVS650, that after posting, I decided to delete but couldn't, yet could modify. Anyway the seating position doesn't allow me to ride for any length of time without lower back pain. I'm not exactly tall and thought about changing from forward controls to mid, then realised that changing the seat would be a lot easier. Got a second hand seat coming that I can modify to try to get a better riding position. Lower and further forward. Will take pics and post progress as and when.

My savage had that problem... the cure was a spacer under the front mount lowering the rear and taking the pressure off your lower back/tail bone

So is it the position or the seat itself Dave? Will a different shaped or different thickness seat cure it?

Think it's a bit of both. Mainly that I'm sat so far away from the pegs, that my legs are too straight and to move around on the seat I have to pull hard on the bars. The seat actually has a lot of pretty dense foam and by reshaping this I should be able to move the bum position down and forward, so that I'm at least 2" and probably 3" closer to the pegs with more bend in the knee & hips. While 2" might not seem a lot, it can make a huge difference. Just taping a pit of padding to the back of the seat to push me forwards a bit helped a lot. By cutting up a cheap second hand seat, I've not got a lot to lose in trying and a lot to gain if it works.

Yey, seat arrived. It was in such good condition it seemed a shame to butcher it, but butcher it I did. Dotted line shows how much foam to cut off.

Cut and sanded. Cover put back on. Damn that really hurts your fingers trying to get it tight and straight. Seat now follows the frame line better and has moved the seating position about an 1 1/2" lower and roughly 2 1/2" closer to the pegs. A taller person would probably find it uncomfortable but it feels heaps better to me and that's all that matters. May have to adjust the bars slightly and only a ride out will see if it helps reduce the lower back pain.

I know. Think it must be some sort of illness. Hopefully I'll never be cured.
