Recently managed to break the front jaw clean off of my big bench vice. Cry
Bought an even bigger, heavy duty one. When I say heavy i mean 60 Lbs heavy. Smiley
Only problem is I'm going to have lower the bench or make a step to stand on to use it. Grin

I will attempt to weld up the old one but, as it's cast iron, I'm under no illusion that it will be anywhere near as strong as before.

do you have cast rods? or dissimilar rods? big V grind and blast them in, it'll be fine, until next time  Cheesy dont forget pre heat and post heat on cast. You'll be fine, what can possibly go wrong (my Mantra)

NiFe rods.   These worked for a welding a 3/4" Hardox steel surface to my cast iron anvil. I might strap the sides to add a little more strength. One handy thing about having a forge is being able to get large lumps of metal very hot.

Not the prettiest of welding but should hold it together, for a while at least. Deep V prepped (3/4 depth) root welded then filled.

Well as a vice it works fine, but I wont try to press any bearing with it.   Wink
Had difficulties (read never found) the right setting for the rods. It was always either too low an amperage to sustain a good arc or turn it up till it would arc nicely and the rod would quickly overheat over it's entire length.  Undecided
