For that don't know, the XS650 (which came out around 1968) runs two separate gauze filters - great for catching solid lumps, but that's about it.

Sump strainer - there's good argument to splash-the-cash and fit the aftermarket version from MikesXS / Heiden tuning as the originals are reported to tear the mesh away from part of the plate leaving a nice big hole! (and I think the replacements have a small magnet too)

Screen filter that sits in the RHS casing - MikesXS / Heiden sell a paper filter (Honda motorcycle part) and an adaptor so it'll fit the XS.

This means that you can now run a 'modern' detergent oil, and it will now actually have somewhere to deposit  the nastiness its collected as opposed to letting it circulate till the next oil change.

Heiden is in Holland (Europe outlet for Mikes XS)

Mikes XS is the in USA

The Smedspeed website has an interesting article relating to the XS oil filters, and a conversion they offer which allows a modern cartridge filter to be mouted to the sump plate.

Always useful info for future reference Tony. Thanks.
I like the Smedspeed one, purely for it's purposeful look, but wouldn't have the ground clearance on my own bike for the filter below the engine.
