Do i need a weight certificate for a virago 535 trike for its first mot? The reason that i ask is that i was talking to a chap with a 535 trike and he couldnt get a weight certificate as it was too light to read on the weigh bridge. If that is the case with my new one (thats still not finished!!!) how do i get a weight certificate....if i need one. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks, regards K

Where did that 13mm spanner go then?

When we were applying for the SVA test for my truck, we estimated the vehicle weight. The examiners at the VOSA test centre then weighed it themselves. That probably doesn't help you at all, but just thought I'd mention it. Sure you need a weight certificate?

Is the trike "a bolt on conversion" meaning that is can easily be changed back to a bike. If so I don't believe you do, but DVLA may wish to have it inspected to ensure this is the case. I am sure others who have gone down this route will be able to help.

I don't know whether you NEED a weight certificate, but as for your mate not being able to get one - I'd say that was a case of the weighbridge operator having a case of 'can't be arsed' - my Kwak GT550 trike is a bolt-on conversion, and I have a weight certificate for it, and I very much doubt if your mate's Virago trike weighs less than mine which is 340kg.

You are probably right Bobbi, can't be arsed sounds about right. Checked with dvla all they want is some photos and the log book...... However that may change by the time its finished!!! I can't see that my 535 will be less than 340kg i'll try talking to the bloke at the weigh bridge at the local quarry. I may just try to call dvla too. It is a bolt on conversion. Regards K

when I had mine inspected by dvla they wanted a weight certificate for taxation class. plus the mot tester asked to see it for its 1st mot, for brake efficiency testing and to make sure that it was in the right mot class

Any I have seen on a weighbridge have been issued with a headed statement from the weighbridge operators stating ; Vehicle Registration Number ABC 123 weighs under 400kgs ; as the weighbridge did not register below that . . .

Must admit I had forgotten about the MOT brake efficiency testing. Would have thought a 535 trike would be well under 300kg. The weighbridge ticket for my Reliant based trike is 320kg yet both VOSA and myself weighed it at 280kg.

I towed mine in, they weighed the car and trike, then just the car, that gave the weight of the trike I was talking to some one who maintains weight bridges and he said they all have a + or - but didn't say what

Wel my trike was ridden in and out anbd has an 'in' weight of 320kg and an 'out' wight of 340kg, so I guess maybe it was too light for the weighbridge to be reliable. But the main thing is that it clearly shows it's under 450kg (or whatever the weight is that means a trike has to be registered as PLG)
