Sorry for jumping into a forum without knowing anyone ... a friend of mine recommended people here as knowing a thing or two ...

I assume there's probably a simpler answer to this than the world of pain I've been dragging myself through ... bought an old ZX4 from someone, expecting a few hidden surprises (old sports bike, quite cheap for a runner with an MOT, so there's bound to be a delights).

Anyway, one thing that cropped up was a hole in exhaust header pipe, nicely covered up with a bandage, which had been painted rust coloured, full marks for effort!

Trouble is, it's in an awkward spot ... a cross pipe between the two inner down pipes, and it's basically turned into a colander round there. I could get it welded, but it might be too hard to get at, and the whole system pretty corroded anyway.

OK, so no-one does exhausts for a 1988 Kawasaki ZX4, it's a weird little Japanese import. I did think I'd keep an eye on the breaker's yards for one, but chances are they'd be pretty much as shagged as the one I have.

SoooOOOoo, unless anyone knows better I'm going to have to consider a bespoke option. Anyone know anyone? recommend anyone? got any advise?

Closest I found was the ZXR400 exhaust, apparently the engine is the same, but I can't get any info on mounting or shape.  SP Engineering and Jap4Performance claim to have that exhaust. ... would it be worth getting that and getting someone to bend it to fit, rather than build from scratch?

Hiya Stumpy .. did you used to post on UKBF?  I live in Southampton. But then if you know the R6 headers fit, I could just get hold of a set ... when you say fit, would I need any modifying to the pipes or mountings to happen?

When you say balance pipe, you mean the bit I describe as being shot? I had thought about that, but I reckon the rest of the exhaust is pretty much knackered, could be wrong.  Certainly the down pipes around the area started to get holes as soon as I touched them with a wire brush.

found these as well r6 one would fit but may well need tweaking to fit behind fairing and or radiator zxr 750 another possibility ... i would remove what i had and take to brakers to compare if i were you check spacers and flange sizes also exit point

welcome to forum by the way

Had someone get back to me to confirm (or is that deny?) the possibility of using ZXR400 pipes.

However, stumpy's suggestion of R6 pipes is much nicer, there's tons of not very old R6 bits all over eBay, like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390434660172?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619

At that sort of price I could almost buy it to try and just stick it back on eBay if it seems all wrong.  What else am I going to need to swap full exhaust?  can I make header gaskets or should I be able to buy the R6 ones and use them?

Oh, and sorry about all the questions, thanks for the help so far.

.... hmm wonder if I could just go steal the pipes off someone's GT550

I though the whole point of posting here was to get something that fits?
