Title: Basingstoke Transport Festival Sunday 11th May '14
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 15, 2014, 07:18:30 PM
Just received the entry form for this year's show.
Are we up for this again? If you're new to the forum, it's a 2000 vehicle outdoor show, held in the local park in Basingstoke, Hants, jointly run by the Basingstoke council & the Thornycroft vehicle preservation society. It runs from 11am ish to 5pm ish on a Sunday, with free entry.
We've had a pitch there for the last ... 6 or 7 years? displaying some of you lot's projects. It's basically an excuse for a bit of a forum get-together.
Nothing particularly organised -ha, ha, ha!! Nothing organised at all. We're the scruffy lot in the corner of the club display field, eating cake & making the place look untidy.
We'd love to see you, particularly if you bring a vehicle to display & especially if you bring cake. Unfinished projects are just as welcome as shiney show machines as the general public seem to like seeing what goes on "behind the scenes" of a custom build.
We get allocated the same sized pitch every year & have never yet managed a tidy & orderly display, (anyone fancy taking on vehicle marshalling duty?).
Cars, trikes, bikes -whatever you're building, bring it along.
We need some idea of who's definitely going to attend though & with what, so if you can make it, (& can stay the whole day), add your name & vehicle below please.

Manky ....Ford Popular pick-up truck.

Yeah, thanks for that Tel!
Got to check with the organisers about insurance documents. Because the show's jointly run by the Thornycroft preservation society & the local council, they like to have lots of paperwork to check. The guy I've always dealt with is retiring from running the club display field this year. He was always happy to just wave us in without worrying about forms. I need to check the new guy's equally easy going.

I was chatting to another forum member by PM about it only last night Terry. Going to be a busy week for me at work cos my usual partner's on holiday, but if I finish early enough tomorrow, I'm going to call at the old organiser's house & clarify it with him. I'll let you know.

Title: Re: Basingstoke Transport Festival Sunday 11th May '14
Post by: Manky Monkey on March 31, 2014, 05:55:56 PM
Right, I spoke to the old organiser of the club display area this afternoon.
All we need is registration numbers & insurance company name & policy number for any road going vehicles, (those that are actually registered & insured). Unfinished projects or off road vehicles don't need anything.
It's purely to give the council bods some details to keep them happy. So I need to pass on a list to the organisers a couple of weeks before the show.

It'll be great to see you mate. I need your registration number, insurance company name & policy number please Stumps, tonight if possible, (got to give the organisers a list tomorrow). Same goes for anyone else that hasn't already given me their details please, (just road going show vehicles, not tow cars or part built projects).

Absolutely nothing organised for this this year. If anyone can help, we need a couple of frames to hold the MMMotors banners, (we used steel tubing last year, but it's ben cut up & used for something else since then). I can measure them up if anyone can make something.

Are we going to bother with the information boards for each vehicle? (half you lot don't bother filling them in). If so, then we need about 20 A4 sized plywood boards with wooden stakes attached to push into the ground in front of each vehicle. Also 20 A4 sheets of paper with the MMMotors logo printed on the top & basic details to be filled in -owner's name, vehicle type, engine type & size, any points of interest etc.

Hopefully Steve & Lesley will be bringing their race truck again, with it's awning &, most importantly, kettle. Anything else?

No idea Terry. It just keeps the council bods happy. The show's jointly organised by the Thornycroft preservation society & Basingstoke council -I think they just like to have some paperwork to look at. You joining us this year?

Not sure yet was thinking riding up with three mates, but wont see them until sat to ask for there insurance details.
so what do they do if some one just turns up in there motor and say there with a car or bike club

As you know from previous shows, they give us a bunch of vehicle passes, which we're supposed to show at the gate to get in. In practice, to date, we've never been asked for them, but as I've said earlier, there's a new guy in charge of the club display field this year, so it might be different.
I'm still dealing with the old organiser as he lives a few streets away from me, (I used to deliver his mail). I've told him I'll gather as many details as I can but that we never really know till the day who'll show up & we often have unfinished & therefore unregistered vehicles.
If you fancy coming, PM me your reg number, insurance company name & policy number please, (better to have it & you not show, than the other way round), then I'll pass on your mates' details if/when you get them.

Received 24 vehicle entry passes in the post today, with a note saying Please ask your members to write their registration numbers on the passes. I assume they'll check at the gate, but that should only apply to vehicles actually being ridden or driven in. The local Police Station's right opposite the entrance gate & the marshals are always under pressure to get everyone onsite & the road cleared as quickly as possible. So it all gets a bit hectic. I'm guessing we'll just play it by ear on the day as we normally do. A bit late to get the passes posted out to everyone now, so we'll do the same as usual -I'll give everyone my mobile number & when you get close, give me a shout & I'll nip up to the gate with a pass for you.

Mr & Mrs Brock are bringing their race truck, which has an awning on the side, so we won't have the annual gazebo wrestling session this year. Decided not to bother with vehicle information cards this time cos half of them don't get filled in anyway. So it's just a matter of arriving & parking up -& Mr Newbie's been volunteered as parking captain, cos he's always there first.
All vehicles have to be onsite by 10.00 ish. So somewhere between 8 & 9 would do it.

CANCEL OR CARRY ON?

We have problems people.

Had a call from my brother, Mr Brock, this afternoon. Unfortunately he & his good lady Lesley won't be able to make it, which means we won't have a freshly built dragster to show off -but more importantly, means we won't have the use of his race truck either, with it's awning, seating & kettle.

The Met Office forcast for Sunday is a 78% chance of rain, with wind.

My own truck ain't gonna make it either.

So, worst case scenario- we spend the day stood in the rain, with nowhere to shelter, with a reduced dispaly. Hardly the end of the World I know, but as it's a group thing, it's down to you guys to decide if we go anyway, or give it a miss this year. Opinions please?

I'll post pictures of the Tot rod soon.

Bbc wearher says it should be dry by about 10-11.
I have a pop up gazebo (with side panels) I can bring along. Its only 3x3m but its offers some shelter. Also have a small butane burner for the kettle.

I vote for still go.
If the group choice is to miss it this year then i'll probably do a trip to Hayling.

Evenin' chaps.  ;D
Well, I woke up this morning to the sound of rain on the window & could quite happily have turned over & gone back to sleep. Wasn't feeling enthusiastic at all, but arrangements had been made & people were making the effort to come along & do their bit, so the show had to go on.
I'm so glad we went ahead with it though. By lunchtime the grey clouds had blown away to leave a warm, sunny afternoon & it turned into a cracking day out. As always, you lot did us proud! We definitely have the most varied, interesting mix of machines & probably the most welcoming, well informed hosts on hand to chat to Joe Public too. The punters do seem to like the weird stuff we bring along. Every machine on our pitch had it's share of admirers & I spoke to at least 3 different show goers who told me they like our corner of the field cos they never know what they're going to find there!
You did splendidly gentlemen, as you always do. Thank you.  :-*

For once, I actually managed to escape for a couple of hours & have a mooch around the rest of the show & even managed to hand over photographing duties to Janie, (just sorting out the pics now). I did try to chat to all of you, but if I missed anyone, erm, Hello!

Special thanks this year go to:
Mr Olds for making up the website banner supports at short notice, as well as creating this year's MMMotors trophy, (every year we make a trophy & decide on the day who to give it to & why).
Mr Galaxie for the quietly efficient catering & providing the gazebo, (the pecan pie was fabulous mate).
Mr Twisted for transporting my own project to the show & back at very short notice.

Every year I approach the show thinking Never again, it's too much hassle to organise -& every year I leave thinking That was great! Let's do it again next year!
Thanks for a brilliant day.

Glad there was good weather and you all had a good time!  Damned if I won't come next year without the trike (I just couldn't face getting up early enough to get it loaded and on my way in time to be there for 10)

Doesn't seem right not to be there at least for a while!

You were missed Bobbi. So was Clive, who couldn't make it on the day. We always lose a few from the list as the date approaches, but that's inevitable when you try to get any far flung group together in one place.
Nice to see Chris, (Phunkie Hiboy), Merv, Bob, (Baychimp), Chevy Rick, Jay Jay & a whole bunch of non Monkey mates who dropped by to say hello.
Next year we'll get organised!

A Thornycroft lorry. They were a major employer in Basingstoke for nearly 100 years, specialising in heavy lorries like the famous "Mighty Antar" tank transporters. The show's jointly run by the local council & the Thornycroft Preservation Group, so there were quite a few in attendance.

This belongs to Sandra and Dean of the New Forest, who maintain the Hearse Register.  Their collection is mainly hearses but depending on the outcome, this ambulance could have been transporting a body, so not too different!

There was an old Daimler hearse at the show. The owner said he plans to drag race it later this year.

Only 1 seat, but 2 doors.

That's because you need to exit quickly when you are about to be run over by a lorry!

We met this vehicle and its owner at the Newbury meet. It was interesting talking to him.

89 pounds, 12 shillings & sixpence, from Friary Motors, based where the Audi/Volkswagon dealership is now, in Hatch, just outside Basingstoke.

Beautiful aluminium bodied Bristol in untouched "barn find" condition. It's driven regularly & has belonged to the same guy for 47 years.
He described it as like bringing your favourite Grandfather back to life -same voice, same wrinkles, same fun.

Time to play, pack away the toys.
Big Darren on his Yamaha R1 powered quad.
Obviously we don't condone such hooliganism on the council's freshly mown grass, but it was on the neighbouring Southern Modified Car Club's pitch, so nothing to do with us.

That's because you haven't been taught Chevy Rick's technique of moving people along. I am sure he will be more than willing to teach you!  ::)

I can't tell you myself on here as Mr Manky Monkey would go into meltdown and the computer would do the same trying to replace lots of letters with *!?% and #.

Great photos Janie. I didn't realise it was Andy's camera you were using. Good job I didn't drop it while you were eating Galaxie500's delicious chocolate pecan pie.

JJ  :)

Rare and an oddity. Friary used to be at Hatch just outside Basingstoke and specialised in converting Vauxhall Velox and Cresta into estate cars.
Fords were usually done by a sister company Abbots of Farnham. Consul, Zephyr and Zodiac.
My first real big rebuild was an Abbot Consul
