Title: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Manky Monkey on December 30, 2011, 04:45:00 PM Yup, it's come round again.
If youre a regular here, you'll know we have a bit of a forum get-together every Spring by taking a pitch at the Basingstoke Festival of Transport. As the name suggests, it's a one day show, with around 900 machines covering all aspects of motorised transport, from vintage lorries to buses, to traction engines to motorcycles to cars -plus a bunch of Monkeys with weird home-made stuff ...that's us. We've been doing this for 5 or 6 years now & every time we say next year, we're gonna get organised. Strangely, it hasn't happened yet. Jointly organised by the Basingstoke Borough Council & the Thornycroft Vehicle Preservation Society, the Festival's held in Basingstoke's War Memorial Park, which covers 2 large fields, 5 minutes walk from the town centre. Our pitch is in the club display section. Nothing too strenuous -we just turn up with a borrowed marquee, spend half the morning trying to put it up, arrange our The entry form arrived in the post this morning & needs to be returned by the 1st of April '12. At some point we'll start a list of interested forumers, but for now, this is just a heads up to let you know the date. We usually average a couple of dozen assorted bikes, trikes & cars & always try to present as varied a mix as we can. Past experience has shown that the general public are just as interested, if not more so, in unfinished projects as they are in shiney concourse condition vehicles. It's a chance for them to see the "behind the scenes" bit of custom building. Obviously, you'll need to make your own arrangements for getting your machine to & from the show. Entry's free, but we need to tell the organisers how many vehicle passes we need. Basingstoke is in Hampshire, about 30 miles from London, on junction 6 of the M3. The show usually runs from around 11am to 5pm on a Sunday. I'd like to display our vehicles in a more organised way, without compromising the friendly welcome we've become known for. So if you've got any ideas, get in touch please. It'd be great to see you there. 2011 was my first visit, and only knew Manky, so went round and say hello to all the other Monkeys, and what a great bunch of people you are!! ;D The show it self is impressive with sooooo many vehicles on display, and covering such a wide spectrum from steam wagons, trucks, buses, cars, bikes, stock, restored and custom. It takes ages to walk round and see it all. I'd definitely recommend it if you haven't been before........ Here's the 2011 thread, go to page 9 onwards for some photos. http://www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=8855.120 Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Clive on December 31, 2011, 08:39:03 AM Bugger!! won't be there this year, as we're on holiday! :( :(

Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: BikerGran on December 31, 2011, 09:36:40 PM I'll be there! I really love that show and meeting all the Mankys!
My trike is neither shiny concourse condition nor an unfinished project - it's a representative of the "I don't polish it, just use it! " class! It's a bit difficult to organise the display when you never know till the last minute what's going to be there, but how about having a couple of bits of tape (or rope or whatvere better idea anyone has) on the ground, from the sides of the marquee to the front of the site, park vehicles (prolly in no particular order) facing inwards, your posh signs at the front ends of the tape, the Manky Mobile in pride of place in front center, and any extra vehicles dotted about the centre as they arrive? Bit like this..... Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: spanners on December 31, 2011, 09:39:16 PM bl##dy ell a plan monkeys can never follow a plan :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: BikerGran on December 31, 2011, 10:44:06 PM That would be no good, I don't get there early enough (and actually can't guarantee to be there at all)

Yup, that's the plan Terry. I suspect we'll have less vehicles this year, (less forumers with finished projects & less money to spend on fuel etc), but maybe we can display them better. :) I'll call at the organiser's house when I finish work tomorrow. It'll be a pleasure to have you aboard Gary -& Mr Phunkie again too. ;D We've been doing this show for 5 or 6 years now, simply because I used to live in Basingstoke so it was my local event. This year's actually the 21st anniversary one. We've kinda become known as the scruffy bunch who turn up with all the weird stuff. :P It seems the punters are just as interested in seeing the "behind the scenes" view of unfinished projects as they are finished, shiney show vehicles. We also go out of our way to be welcoming & to answer all those daft questions we get from the show-going public. So if anyone's got something that's together enough to be recognisable as a vehicle, bring it along. I've provisionally put us down for 24 vehicle passes. I reckon they give us the same sized plot every year, no matter how many we bring, so if we get more on the day, we'll just have to budge up a bit. :) Manky ..............................Ford Pop pick-up, unfinished Reliant trike. The vehicle passes have arrived. Just photo-copied bits of paper, but the marshals like to see one in every vehicle at the gate. Usual practice is for us to give out our mobile numbers in advance & you lot to ring when you're queueing at the gate so we can nip up with a pass for you. Saves them getting lost or forgotten. Very often though, just saying you're with the Manky Monkeys is enough to get you in. ;D
For those that haven't been before, entry for both exibitors & visitors is completely free, although there's a charge for visitor carparking, (2 quid I think), that goes to charity. In the envelope with the tickets was this cerstifficut. That's nice of them -even if they did spell our name wrong. :) Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: BikerGran on March 14, 2012, 08:22:26 PM Aww! And I always say (though I may be biased) that the MMM stand is much more interesting than all the one-make stands - specially the modern cars! Hello Angus-& welcome to the forum. All members, new & old equally welcome. Nothing very organised, (definitely not organised), just turn up, park up & enjoy the day. I've already got the passes. They're just photocopied tickets, but the organisers like to see them with the vehicles when they come in the gate. Rather than posting them out to everyone & half the entrants losing them or forgetting them, we give out our mobile numbers beforehand & people give us a shout when they arrive, so we can nip over to the gate with a pass for them. Our pitch seems to be the same size every year, but they're usually happy to give us more passes if we need 'em. Show entry's completely free for exhibitors & punters. Also my Ford Pop truck, (running but not road legal), the 3 miles from Loony's workshop to the show & back, (could be towed on a dolly I guess). Can anyone help? Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: bigdarren on April 22, 2012, 08:22:01 PM have you asked ash ? ;)

I'm sure it must've been suggested at Loony's workshop, so there must be a reason why he can't do it -might be racing, (Ash races in a drift car championship), but I'll check again.

Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: dobber on April 24, 2012, 01:35:58 PM just sold an item on ebay which was picked up by a guy into scooters who lives a few mile from the show. said its a cracking show with good auto jumble and a vast array of anything transport. making me want to get there even more so..
did you get any joy with a trailer m/m?. Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Manky Monkey on April 24, 2012, 05:52:27 PM Not had a chance to ring round the local trailer hire companies yet, but had a measure up of the Pop this afternoon. We'd need a trailer 12 feet long by 5 1/2 feet wide. Or a towing dolly.
Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Manky Monkey on April 24, 2012, 06:35:15 PM Looks like Taz's Charger's just going to be too costly & too much hassle to bring along & I'm still working on ways to transport my trike & the Pop.
Big Dog, can you confirm yet whether you'll be able to make it? Hopefully our good friend & forum member Ian of Wyliez Customs will be bringing along something, probably his model AA truck. So quickly totting up, I make that ...7 cars/trucks, 7 bikes & 14 trikes. That's actually a pretty fair representation of the vehicles here on the forum I think. 28 in total & we've got 24 vehicle passes, so I'll contact the organisers & get a few more. Although they state passes must be shown at the gate, we've never had a problem & if it came to it, we could argue that several are unfinished so don't need passes! It'll be fine. Any ideas on the "seating plan"? Cars down one side, bikes down the other & trikes in the middle? Only a couple of weeks away now &, as usual, we're completely disorganised. Loony will be supplying the marquee, which comes without instructions & defies any kind of logic, so we'll need several volunteers to wrestle with it & try to assemble it into a vaguely tent like shape please. I'll bring along half a dozen wooden patio chairs & some MMMotors banners. Other than that, we're open to suggestions & donations. There are food stalls onsite, but if anyone wants to bring along a barbeque, or a coolbox or rugs, or anything else you think might come in handy, please do, (cake is always welcome). I think booze is O.K onsite but would suggest if you want it, you bring your own & remember you've got to ride/drive home afterwards. Show vehicles have to be onsite by 10.30am at the latest as the show opens at 11. People do tend to drift away early if they've got a long journey or the weather turns wet, but officially it ends at 5pm. We'll supply A4 sized information boards for each vehicle, so you can jot down basic details for the punters -owner, vehicle make, engine size etc & any points of interest, but if you want to bring your own display boards feel free. Just remember to keep them a reasonable size please. Obviously we want you to see the rest of the show & enjoy the day, but we're known as a very hands-on display, doing our best to encourage the public to come & have a look at what we do, so it'd be nice if you can be on hand to answer any questions about your vehicle or just chat to the punters at some point please. I think that's about it. If anyone else fancies bringing something to show, add your name to the list please. Doesn't matter if it's an unfinished project or a super shiney show machine. Everyone's welcome. ;) Manky...............................Ford Pop pick-up, unfinished Reliant trike, XS650 Yamaha bobber Tazet................................Unfinished Reliant trike. The postcode for those with Sat Navs is RG21 4AH. About 30 miles East of London, on junction 6 of the M3. It'll be signposted with yellow "Transport Festival" signs as you come off the motorway. Google map here I think: War Memorial Park (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUK291&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=basingstoke+council+offices&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=council+offices&hnear=0x487404c180a05953:0x682dc7216eb9702a,Basingstoke,+Hampshire&cid=0,0,8137975679969287106&ei=BHacT-jaAsfB0QXTv_H7Dg&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CB4Q_BIwAA) You need to be onsite by 10.30am at the latest. We usually have someone there from about 8, but don't expect us to be organised! We always lose a few as the show date draws near. I've just spoken to the organisers & although there's been almost constant rain in Hampshire, they're still going ahead with the show. Mike, the Pop should fit on that trailer. BikerGran's a possible no-show but not sure yet. Tom's bike's still on Loony's bike jig so won't be there, but not sure about his truck. Anyone else? Obviously, we're looking for extra vehicles so if anyone fancies joining us, make yourselves known please. So are you still picking up the Dutton in Reading on Sunday? Couldn't you pick it up early, put it on our pitch, then collect the Pop? Looks like I'm going to have to rent a Transit van for the weekend, just to move Taz's trike, my bike, the marquee etc. Half a week's wages for 2 days! See you bright n early Sunday morning chaps. Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 10, 2012, 10:42:23 AM Right, huge thanks to Mr Snafu who, with luck, can arrange a discounted rental van for me, (I need to lug Taz's part built trike from our shed in Surrey, plus my part built Yamaha from PD's garage in Hampshire, plus the marquee from Loony's place etc).
As Bobbi's pointed out, the weather's forcast as sunny on Sunday -so let's do it. We always lose a few names from the list as the show approaches -not complaining, it's just the way it goes unfortunately -so if anyone else can make it down to Hampshire for the day, with something interesting to show, get in touch please. As we've said, we don't do a lot, just park up, spend the morning wrestling with the marquee, then chat & munch donuts for the afternoon, but it's a good excuse to put faces to forum names & exchange ideas. Come along & say Hello. Things needed at the moment if anyone has them: Spare tent pegs, spare guy ropes, (just in case), gaffer tape, large plastic ground sheet/tarpaulin for the marquee, seating, (I'll bring half a dozen wooden patio chairs), trestle table, Anything you think would keep us amused for the afternoon, without getting us slung out -music, a pile of custom magazines to browse etc. Not sure if we're allowed barbeques, (probably not -I doubt we'd be allowed naked flames near vehicles & the show's run by the council so their health & safety reps will be onsite), but any food & drink you want. We'll supply an A4 sized information sheet & a board to pin it to for each vehicle, but if you have any display material of your own for your machine, feel free to bring it, as long as it's reasonably sized & doesn't take up half the pitch. I'll conatct everyone on the list in the next couple of days with my mobile number. Look forward to seeing you all. ;) Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: ROD on May 10, 2012, 11:52:34 AM Andy

Mr Rod, if you're on the list, you're coming in! I'll PM or email everyone my mobile number in the next couple of days. Just shout when you get to the gate & I'll nip up with a pass, but as Bobbi says, they usually just wave the Manky looking ones through. Mr Pie, I'm aiming to be there around 8am, but I'm not the most organised Monkey in the World -that's why they call me Manky. :P All vehicles have to be onsite by 10.30 latest. Mr Gal ...no, that don't sound right. Nathan, glad to hear you're still on the list! We usually try to keep it to a forum members meet, but as you can see, we've got room for a couple more. We'll put you down as Galaxie & guests. ;) (the Guzzlers are the local custom car club in Basingstoke by the way folks. They came along to the Pop fire up night at Loony's workshop & are good mates). Right. The entrance to the showfield is in Crossborough Hill, off London Road, Right opposite Basingstoke Police Station. RG21 4AH should get your SatNavs near enough. Basingstoke has a dual carriageway ringroad running right round it. There should be yellow "TransporT festival" signs on each exit, (yeah, capital T at each end). I'd like to be there by 8am, but it depends what time Mr Spanners gets to Loony's workshop to load up my truck, (7 -7.30 Mike?). The gate marshals normally just wave us straight in when we say we're with the Manky monkeys, but I'll PM or email everyone my mobile number so if there's a problem, give me a shout & I'll nip up to the gate with a vehicle pass. The pitches are marked with small white pegs in the ground. Ideally we'll bung the marquee up at the back & a MMMotors banner at each front corner ...then it descends into chaos from there really. I'd like to put the cars down either side, at 45 degrees to the front, bikes front centre & trikes behind them. Never seems to work out that way though. The weather forcast looks reasonable, so see you there! We enjoyed ourselves again this year, managed to pick some autojumble parts for the Allard and met some new (to us) monkeys and some old (nothing to do with big numbers here) monkeys. And then there was the weather, how you managed that bit we don't want to know, but we're pleased you did.
See you all in a couple of weeks......... maybe http://www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=10955.0 Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: merv on May 13, 2012, 06:45:56 PM I went to the Basingstoke Festival of Transport 160 mile round trip, I'm sorry i got there later than i would of like, just saw three good trikes leave as i approached the manky monkey pitch. Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 13, 2012, 09:41:56 PM Hi guys.
What can I say! I'm a very proud Monkey. You lot were fantastic today. So many people going out of their way to make the day a success. From all who brought a bike, trike or car along, to those who couldn't but came along anyway, to those who brought cake -what is it with the cakes?! We were swamped with them! All very much appreciated & quite a few eaten. The visitors to Loony's workshop will be dining on them for a week & I took 2 big boxes full home for Taz to take in for her stable hands tomorrow. Did I mention I'm also quite partial to 10 pound notes? Special thanks to Mr Spanners for trailering my truck to & from the show, & to Mr Snafu for arranging the discounted rental van. But most of all to all the Monkeys there today. I did try to chat to everyone, but I know there were several who appeared, shook hands & disappeared again, while I was holding 2 other conversations. So if I didn't get to say Hi I apologise. I don't know what makes this day so hectic. I wasn't really doing a lot, but seemed to be constantly on the go & barely left our pitch all day. So I'm relying on you all to share some piccies of the rest of the show. Did you enjoy it? Were we the only custom vehicle pitch? Are you coming back next year? Hope so. I've unloaded the van & returned it, grabbed something to eat & now I'm slowly recovering -& wishing I'd used some sun tan lotion. I'm bright pink. Same time next year chaps? ;D Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 13, 2012, 09:50:32 PM Stumpy- I missed you leaving. Which is a shame cos you're right, you did deserve the trophy. We take one along every year & decide on the day what we're going to award for it for. The general opinion was that you were a worthy winner -just for being an inspiration to the rest of us. I'm not sure how I'd cope with your disability. I doubt I'd still be riding a bike & I definitely wouldn't be such an all round nice guy. You proved that, no matter what life throws at you, it can be overcome. As did Bazza of course, but we've only got one trophy!
PM me your address Stumpy & I'll put it in the post to you. ;) Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 13, 2012, 09:55:20 PM As I said, I hardly left our pitch all day, so here's just a bunch of random snaps, taken as I moved from one conversation to the next.
Setting up. 3 Reliant projects in a row. Terry T's, Tazet's & Dobber's. Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 13, 2012, 09:56:50 PM People, stuff, more people.

Thanks Andy another great day, (did you order the sunshine) Im sorry I didnt have anything ready to display but there will be next year. Really good to meet other monkeys, new and old, although there were some I didnt get around to speaking to. So sorry for that, next year give me a poke if ive not spoken to you :) I hope everyone arrived home safely. JJ is right about the sunburn, me and Emily had red faces after such a sunny day :o Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Horney on May 14, 2012, 07:48:25 PM Do you need to be a FaceBook member to view your pics Nik? I know we don't do anything that spectacular, but as the only custom "club" among a sea of classics, I'd like to think we do our bit to bring chops, trikes & hotrods to the masses. ;D I think the sunshine was the answer to the prayers of the 900 vehicle owners onsite & all the yellow jacketed marshals. Today it was back to reality, trudging the streets of Basingstoke, delivering the mail in the rain. Bazz, the other Pop pick-up belongs to Dave ...nope, forgotten his surname. Tall guy, white jacket, glasses, flat cap. His lady friend was called Diane I think. She's posted a gallery of photos on Facebook apparently. Pick up a copy of this months Custom Car magazine & you'll find a feature on it. My big bro, Steve, (Brock), & his lady wife Lesley, (Black Pig), brought along the Black Pig Too drag car. Lesley's just bought a new set of pistons for it, so it's back on it's wheels after being in storage for a while & due it's first outing at the track with the new engine in a few weeks time. They race with the "Wild Bunch" nostalgia racing club. Every year we put the banners away & say next year, we'll be organised. Never happened yet. I'd love to have a much more spectacular pitch. Something wacky that really brings in the punters. I'd really like a pair of life size monkey sculptures, sitting cross legged, holding the banners. Maybe we should start work on it now! We always seem to be the last people standing at the end of the day. Always suprises me how quickly it all disappears & reverts to being a normal public park again.

I couldn't make it last year, but he's always supported us, so it's the least I can do to go along & return the favour. Pieman, Taz says can she have some more of those fabulous muffins please -think it was you who kindly donated them wasn't it? We were absolutely bombarded with cakes this year! At the end of the day I was desperately giving away as much as I could so I had room to load everything back in the van! Thank you all for your commestible generosity. Brock & Mrs Brock took a big bag of rock cakes home, so Steve will be getting them in his lunchbag for the next week. Loony took a huge bag of assorted shop bought cakes, which he & the visitors to his workshop are slowly working their way through. And I took home the jam donuts & muffins, which Taz took down to her stable yard for the staff & customers. She had to fight them off for the muffins! Do you deliver to Guildford?! I was very good & only had one donut all day on Sunday -& a couple of small choccie muffins when I dropped into Loony's workshop this afternoon. I reckon we were definitely the pitch with the highest calorie content at the show though. Thanks to all who brought them. :) Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: stumpy on May 16, 2012, 07:20:55 AM bl##dy hell i,v just realised who basket case (bazza) is ::) ::) sorry i didnt chat much i seem to have had a ,,confused,, day at basingstoke ::) ::) LOL ;D It's quite mad innit.....the difference with forum and real names. Title: Re: 21st Basingstoke Festival of Transport 13th May 2012 Post by: Manky Monkey on May 21, 2012, 08:29:32 PM Our pleasure Stumpy. It was a kinda joint decision -I suggested it to a few people & they unanimously agreed. The stainless monkeyhead was very kindly lazer cut & welded by Steve Brock, (it's a larger version of the bonnet badge on my truck). He told me to do something useful with it, so I did! The teak plaque was cut by a local joinery company. It's the annual make a trophy then find someone to give it to award. ;D
