3mm wouldnt be my first choice, but I have been told I over engineer things. my answer to that is.....its my arse on the saddle!!!

I think youd struggle to get a nice fat weld round the end of the tube you are trying to connect to it.

I made some MMM type ones out of 5mm tube and welded 5mm flanges on them.
Over-engineered? Maybe, but better safe than sorry.
