Over my dead body will it be Orange or Pink, (before anyone suggests it)  Angry  Still un-decided about the quarters. Would love JC to do it all but really can't afford it.

Took another trip out to JC Restoration today. No more progress on the Charger cos they're waiting for us to deliver the floorpan -& we're still waiting for the American suppliers to get back to us with a price for it. We took them the front bumper so they can check the fit of the grille, front wings etc. Only just managed to squeeze it into the back of my little Fiesta hatchback.
We've been paying for the job bit by bit & are very nearly paid up to date. John & the team have managed to do the work so far much quicker than they'd expected, so we're almost a thousand quid under budget -how often does that happen? So we had a chat to them today about the rear quarters.
We've got friends in the Mopar Muscle Association who've offered to come to the barn where we keep the car & help us replace the rear wings, ("quarters"). It's not that we doubt their abilities, just that -well, JCs have done such a fabulous job of it so far, it'd be a real shame if the back end wasn't finished to the same standard as the front. It'd also be sensible to do it all while the car's still on the jig. As Taz said, we'd feel we were letting the resto guys down if we messed it up. This absolutely isn't going to be a show winning car -that's not what we're aiming for, but to get this far & settle for less for the sake of a few quid would be criminal.
John, the head honcho at JCs, is a pretty, erm, straight talking guy. Watching him going around the car today, punching holes in the back end with a screw driver was pretty depressing -"this is shot, that's rotten, that needs replacing". He's just a perfectionist though. Chargers are his passion & if he had his way, every one would be restored to better than original condition. We've made it very clear that money is a big issue with us -like, we haven't got any. The guys doing the work have told us we've actually had a lot done for cost price or free & we believe them. They also pointed out that if we were to sell it, even in it's current condition, we've already doubled it's value, which is more than it's cost us.
So we're going to trawl the parts suppliers in various countries & see what we can come up with. Ideally we'd replace the rear quarters, outer rear wheel wells & boot floor, which comes in 3 sections. I said from the start I could imagine us starting to replace stuff at the front end & ending up in the boot & it looks like I wasn't far wrong. The amount we budgeted for but haven't yet used will almost cover the rear end work.
Maybe.  Smiley

I would stick with that idea Andy, you will regret it if it all goes tits up and you have to live with it when it's done

send Taz down in some Daisy Duke shorts and T shirt and see if she can negotiate a good deal  Tongue Tongue Tongue Grin

It's not that the other guys can't do the job and I'm sure are very capable as I've seen some of there work but while it's been on the jig and we've had a really good poke about with a screwdriver there is more rot than we'd realised and while it's sitting there doing nothing while waiting on parts then that might as well be done while it's there. I spoke to John about the money and he's happy to do a pay as you go thing so the more money I give him the quicker it's done but if I can only afford a few hours labour then that's all they will do. It will take longer this way but at least I won't be cought out with a big bill in the end that I can't afford to pay off. As andy said the work that has been done is prety much paid up but the floor and sill will be extra but we knew that would be the case with those bits and so far it's under estimate which is great for us.

However good your volunteers are, it's bound to be a better job done in a professional workshop with the car on a jig, and with them being so good about the pay-as-you-go, it's clearly an opportunity not be missed as long as you can make the cash stretch!

Do you have any kind of projection of how long till you get in on the road?  Seems like it could be years rather than months!

No idea on time but yes I can't see it being on the road till the absolute earliest next spring. Would be nice to at least get it running and Mot'd for Basingstoke next year. It's not going to be a showroom car I just want to drive it and have fun  Grin

As an aside, noticed they turn around for BIIIIIIG money when done, except this one:

Yes they do. We saw that one as someone else pointed it out to us. Not as nice looking as the 68-69 ones and less sought after so woildn't make the sort of money that mine would if fully restored.

A '74? Pah! Not a real Charger. The 1968 & '69 models are the ones to go for. By the 70s they'd lost it somehow. The body shape's different, so none of the panels would fit ours even if we broke it for spares.
There's a '69 General Lee replica for sale on American Ebay for 80,000 pounds at the moment, but also a '69 440 in Britain with a Buy it Now price of £25,000.

Just had an email from our panel supplier in New Jersey. They've got the floorpan from their supplier, but the driver's side sill, ("rocker panel"), arrived damaged. So they've ordered another. Meanwhile the car's still sat on JC's jig, awaiting the parts.
