Could you just drill and tap the radiator and fit a switch?
320928518312 (eBay number)

Thats a good idea Smiley  May sort out an alloy threaded insert and weld it in.

i found a reducer on ebay 5/8x18unf male to m14x1.5 female   would fit in the head where the temp sender is then need to find a m14 fan switch

ive had a brain wave pete, you have the alloy rad same as me, mine has a drain tap on the bottom right hand side, havent measured the thread size yet but i remember its around m14 ish size....... Wink

no that one has a 5/8 female, could be used but you would need also a 5/8unf male/male to put in first, ile keep searching the one i found was 5/8male m14 female

You want the stat on te outlet side OAB not the bottom

never thought of that nabs Roll Eyes  i think ile eventually do as fifer said 20 posts ago and put one in the bottom rad hose, i spoke to the local with a reliant trike he has tapped out the sender in the head and fitted a switch in 4 years the fans come on once,and that was when he was changing the coolant, so looks like the rocker switch will do i just thought id be turning it on /off alot more than that. ive got a temp gauge so if im stuck in traffic i can just swich it on to keep her cool untill im moving again

I wonder about that. Isnt the point of the wax thermostat / cooling fan to control the engine temperature? 

This is my thinking....

  • The wax stat opens at a set temperature and is operated by the engine water jacket temperature. This allows water to the radiator to be cooled.
  • If you put the sensor in the radiator return pipe the return water temperature will be regulated to the sensor activation temperature  - that would be the expected engine out water temperature.
  • The engine will now be getting a much higher return water temperature than with a conventional mechanical fan'
  • As the wax stat is already open it can do no more to ask for cooling'
  • This will result in an overall higher temperature in the engine, and an engine outlet temperature much higher than expected?


I think the result of moving the sensor will be to run the radiator at a constant outlet temperature, and the maximum radiator inlet temperature (ie the engine outlet temperature) will not be controlled.

When i wired up the pop.  the fan switch was on the bottom of the rad on the opposite side to the hose

thats what i thought of doing,as i have the alloy rad it has a drain plug at the bottom opposite side to the bottom rad hose

The purpose of the wax stat is to allow the engine to get to an optimal working temperature before allowing the coolant to go to the rad to cool down.
