Merv can he use the hand fixed to the grips for stability? It can take ages before you get it fixed in your head that whatever bit you lost has really gone and any prosthetics are 'tools' in your brothers words. Once you get to that stage you have beaten it Excellent job on the bike and adaptations, much more than I could have thought of never mind done, well done to him. And yes Andy, laugh was the correct response

Hi nabsim the short answer is yes,he lost his arm up to t shirt sleeve level. So the prosthetic arm starts with a shoulder cup going down to an elbow joint then down to the wrist joint which the hand locks into. The hand is the only part that separates from the arm.He can lock all the joints so the arm is totally stiff or he can have it so every thing swivels. He has no need to lock it all up so he keeps it so it all swivels,so his upper body is supported through the arm down to the bars but every thing moves through the movement of the left hand side of the bars. The hand has shaped fingers and the thumb is spring loaded which is quite stiff so locks to the bars but if he came off the hand would detach from the bars just like a normal hand.Hope this explains a few things

Bet it helped with his balance Merv. When I was inatfoo my legwe had a guy come I who had chopped one hand off and a few fingers and thumb off his other hand. He had his arm to mid forearm but he had loads of different attachments for it. One of them was like a pool queue rest that he used for snooker and pool. He brought a few in with him and it was amazing what he had thought up. Whenever I remember him I think of that sergeant in the foreign legion (was it Phil Silvers) with loads of. Different false legs including the canon

My brother comes under the Bristol limb center and they cant do enough for him.He asked about the hand and they came up with the spring loaded thumb also because he likes fishing they made what looks like a pig tail which fits into the wrist instead of the hand and the fishing rod fits into it.I don't know what handed you are but Nick was right handed and that was the arm he lost.So he had to start all over again on how to do things but with his left arm.Just so people know having a disability is not the end of life, since loosing his arm he has built a workshop out of 4inch concrete blocks by him self i helped with the roof that's all. Also he has taken up karate and now he is one belt away from his black belt first dan.I wish you all the best oab its a shame we don't live closer it would be nice to go for a pint or what ever your tipple is.
