Title: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: kevsky on June 11, 2011, 05:08:56 PM
Long story short ,engine needs ali welding and drilling for new exhaust studs but just happen to have a 125 yammy engine lying about (as you do ) so son of mine (who should be doing this write through ) decides on a full rebuild ,which I blame on all you lot on here with your fancy ideas about customising everything you can lay your hands on .So here goes

how many uses for a rusty old air rifle can you think of
well this just one it saved us a lot of hard work in holding the engine up

new heart was laid in but woundn't sit right plates were in the right place but the i/s gap between the plates was smaller than the o/s of the lugs on the engine

t'other side

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: kevsky on June 11, 2011, 06:26:07 PM
at this point in the rebuild ,remember that elf n safe t issue earlier well it decided it wasn't getting the recognition that it thought it deserved so it set about making a name for itself even though we strapped the rear end of the young lady to bench with all the jiggery pokery at the business end the erm.. chair sort of started moving and it was decided to beat a hasty retreat to ground level with her quite a good idea cos once there it can't fall any further
now talking of elf n whatsit and straps check out the working end of the angle grinder
the lesson to be learned here is never drag a power tool towards you by the lead because sometimes they don't like it and magic happens they turn themselves on and pick up anything they can to use as a weapon when they get close to you
fiendish things power tools

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD

old lugs had to be ground off so engine would move around in frame

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: hunter on June 11, 2011, 06:40:19 PM
question to anyone with any knowedge of the legality of this frame number
is it

As you say,is it I don't think it is all numbers are stamped directly on the frame.

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: kevsky on June 11, 2011, 06:41:23 PM
bottom mount line up lovely the gap was to narrow so angle grinder out on engine an a length of 8mm threaded bar through so adjustment could be made on rest of brackets then frame was turned upright again and the top mount laid in

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: kevsky on June 11, 2011, 06:44:28 PM
hunter we can't find numbers on the frame but that can soon be rectified it's just that bike is a mish mash of things but everythng seems to be legal maybe the number will be found after the paints been stripped off

these are the origional plates of the yammy engine as you can see they do not fit too snuggly so wayne cut and welded the old plates to match but the welder strted to play up it didn't want do as it was told (bloody power tools) and they looked a mess but I have every confidence that in a couple of days you will see pics of the greatest workman ship that you will bow down in his presence

t'other side
last one for now more to follow
engine is now out of frame and frame is being tided up prior to painting and a few odds an sods need welding on
will post pics as we go alone
not a bad afternoons work if I do say so myself

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: Cabman77 on June 11, 2011, 07:47:01 PM
Frame number on a pop rivetted plate was ok some years ago but they say it has to be stamped directly onto the frame now

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: WAYNE999 on June 11, 2011, 07:51:16 PM
Shes on a Q plate and registered in 1991 so it may have been ok then ??? But we shall still add the frame no to the head stock before we paint the frame

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: kevsky on June 12, 2011, 04:18:17 PM
OK peeps it's picyabrain time the chap who sold the silencer didn't know what its off so for a fiver its worth a punt whatever,so what we need to know from all you knowedgeable person out there is if its off a 2 strke would it have any effect in performance or do any damage to a 4 stroke engine

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD

If the pipe`s off a two stroke it might overchoke the engine and have too much back pressure.

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: thebigdogsix on June 13, 2011, 05:28:58 PM
Dont wish to appear thick but why wont a 2stroke exhaust work?

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: kevsky on June 13, 2011, 05:37:31 PM
2 strokes need a lot of back pressure dont know the whys and wherefores but they won't run without it

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: thebigdogsix on June 13, 2011, 05:44:30 PM
I have two rs 125 silencers off an aprilla always thought they were 2stroke but they are straight through would i have any problems running these on my trike which is reliant based?

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: WAYNE999 on June 13, 2011, 06:32:51 PM
if it runs straight through i cant see a problem i was unsure about my 5 quid bootsale silencer but i rolled a marble down it and it come out the other side so we'll dee how it goes

new front engine mounting plates

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: nabsim on June 16, 2011, 10:54:31 AM
Bit slow seeing this but my reliant trike has an ali plate with the frame numbers stamped on it pop rivetted to the frame. It isn't a Q plate either was just done and registered in the dark ages methinks. I have had it nearly 4 years and previous owner had it over 10 and it had been a trike a while before he got it so birth date unknown ;)

I think it is more critical when fitting exhaust to a 2-stroke. I know one of mine looked brill (I thought anyway) with a pair of reverse cone mega's off one of my mates olf 4 stroke brit bikes. Problem was it deafened you when you started it up and really needed pedals fitting to try and set off, top end was about 30mph :(

You can always un-rivet the end can and remove some of the baffles if it is too restrictive, well hopefully you can :)

Is the original tank off an MZ?

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: WAYNE999 on June 16, 2011, 12:23:09 PM
i thought that originally but was told its a dt 50 tank if i could find a cheap etz tank it would probably do

Left click & drag your cursor across the words you want to cross out to highlight them, then click on the crossy out symbol, (fourth from left, the box with the letter S with a line through it). Simples.

Bit of a disaster lastnight.Kevsky stripped and cleaned the carb for me we fitted it tried to start her up.She would only start with air intake covered by my hand and then only run for a second. Also she dumped fuel out  of the exhaust and carb if i turned it over for too long any suggestions?

Title: Re: WOTSITS REBUILD
Post by: hunter on June 30, 2011, 09:57:19 AM
If it's dumping fuel as you say,it sounds like float height needs setting,it's letting to much fuel through.

Changed the oil and took the carb to j.b.t. in gorleston today it was cleaned properly and he reset the float valve. Its not p1$$!ng fuel everywhere now but i cant get it to start for love or money.Sparks nice and healthy but it just wont fire.Anyway tomorrows another day wirings nearly finished hope get it done and the brakes started in the morning there should be some more piccys over the weekend when my daddy fetches his camera ;D

Try putting some fuel down the plug hole to start it, hopefully that`ll pull the fuel through for you

Change of coil would you believe it. The spark looked good when checked but there was no combustion. So on a hunch I dug up an old coil that's been kicking about the shed for a while.Immediately the spark looked stronger and now it is firing on easy start.Found another block in the carb cleared that will try to start later on today.I don't want to do it now as there is no exhaust yet and its a  bit early for the neighbours. Also another disaster the engine came with about 8" of its original pipe on trying to remove it one of the bolts snapped in the head. This was the reason I decided to get rid of the original engine.Oh well we'll have to have a look at that through the week front and back brakes on and working still but waiting on my ebay tank cant really go much further without it

a bit of both the tank and seat are very white the vht paint on the engine and exhaust is more of a charcoal grey

Title: Re: WOTSITS RE-REBUILD

Right its been twelve months now (this isn't a long time in the grand scheme of things Mrs. wayne has been waiting for a new back gate for 3 years now) the Guzzi trike is as finished as it's going to get until the winter,so its time to have a look at Wotsit again.
She is stripped (again) and her frame is away for blasting so that all the dodgy welding can be rectified
After my mighty cg 125 being nicked for the second time and Wotsit's yammy engine refusing to produce a spark I have decided to fit the honda engine with its direct lighting and not needing indicators I recon I'll get away with a small burglar alarm battery just to make sure the horn works properly

;D Wish I'd learnt at that age. My Dad was a fantastic carpenter & general builder, but not interested in mechanical stuff at all. I've picked up what little I know from various mates & from making lots of mistakes! Catch 'em while they're young & still got their curiosity.

Yeah, my big brother Steve, (Brock), is just as interested in things mechanical as me, (though, annoyingly, much better than me). His interest probably encouraged mine. I think it's a shared urge to be creative. We just happen to have chosen metal as our canvas.

Being a frame of questionable ancestry I don't feel too guilty about this but I chopped the back end off
being mono shock the rear of the frame is only there so we have somewhere to put the seat
This will be replaced with a new piece set at a jaunty angle so that the arse end is up in the air a little
Ordering a cafe racer style seat next week so that the rear end can be started on
Pics to follow

I honestly don't think anything much bigger would go in.
I haven't altered the main part of the frame at all and when we fitted the last engine (a yammy sr125) there was very little clearance between the head and the frame.

Any how work is continuing with the rear mudguard fitted.I also went to see my MOT chap who said I don't need indicators.and I only need a brake light on one brake so that should simplify the wiring

I like this a lot and it's giving me silly ideas about small bikes.
Too old for a café racer so maybe a full out 70s chop. Long forks, prism tank, king-queen seat and a tiny CG125 engine.
Now where's that bantam frame ?

I have an early cg 125 rolling chassis rather than scrapping a Bantam
The old fella (Kevsky) would shout hieratic if you chopped an old bantam up

Don't panic. I wouldn't cut up a BSA frame. It's easier to make one from scratch. Though being pre 60......

Thinking about a vinyl wrap for the tank and rear of the seat and found this whilst flicking through Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200776869655?var=500068682345&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Wouldn't it be easier just to get the tank painted in a flip paint?

It would probably be easier but I'm no painter and i want to do as much myself as possible.
Also this is a genuine poverty build with most of the parts being dug out of the shed and scrap pile.
The only parts I've bought are the seat and rear light everything else I already had

Exhaust is welded up and fits lovely
She is stripped again and the frame is at work being welded up and having gussets fitted
Hopefully she will be blasted and powder coated within the next couple of weeks

Gussets are in and frame is all welded up we have some gates and railings going to the powder coaters so I'm going to chuck it in with them, the last time I did this it cost me £7 yes £7 to get it coated

She was on a q when I first bought her  and I just used the same vin and reg as its only the rest of the frame that holds the seat that has been altered
Having trouble insuring her bikesure want £850 to insure my 17 year old son and its only a cg125 lump in there

Little shot of her on the road runs sweet but had to free the clutch up
