Title: ideas sought on front end
Post by: dracken1 on November 26, 2009, 01:38:23 PM
About to start my own winter project. going to be using a yam tdm 850 engine, this was after a lot of thought as although the yam is a good torquey lump and slim. It's also quite short, and i like long frames. But by placing the oil tank and battery box i should be able to fill the frame. But the real daft thing is although we have 4 tube benders and 5 frame jigs, i can't build it as none of our jigs are large enough. So mal of metal malarkey will be building the basic frame.

i want a longish front end. teles don't do it for me and niether do springers, and a conventional girder would look a tad to bulky. so have decided to build a HARMAN style front end.
but would like to update the suspension system... BUT HOW AND WITH WHAT????
thats my dilema that i'm hoping someone can come up with. modern versions of the harman forks allow access to the suspension. But nylotron or whatever spacers sliding through grease in the tube acting as damping doesn't do it for me.
so how would you suggest.
just a bit of info.
forks will be made from t45 or chromemoly. front tubes 1.25", rear tubes 1".
So whatever will have to fit in the rear tubes.

I don't need info on rake and trail as we deal with those everyday.
theres some pics below of original harmans, for those who are unaware of what and how they work.
But please note that mine will allow complete access to the suspension, unlike those below.
so ideas please...
regards
all.

That's a tidy set-up Wynne.
Can't help with the forks but would love to see a sketch of the planned build please.  :)
