Is it just me or has the prices engineering firms charge shot through the roof  :(
For those that don't know I'm a "yorkie" as someone on here recently put it ;) ;D (hi VB) and rumour has it we don't like to part with our money but even so!
 I popped into a local engineering firm the other week for a very rough ball park figure for yokes (pair approx 13x6x1.75) fork brace/mudguard mount, headstock, spindle and top nut, wheel spindle and spacers and caliper spacers.
 Go on take guess. :o :o   
Put it this way I wont be using them!!!!

I guess it's cos the price of metal has gone up. 

Very true BG the price of metal has risen but not enough to justify the prices some firms charge :o. I know people have an ever rising cost of living to meet, and I believe people should be paid for their skills  :), but a lot of firms charge way over the top knowing enough people will pay these silly prices to keep them in business! >:( If more people refused prices would be more realistic. Just my opinion   

you should try getting a machine shop in aberdeen . they think that cause theres oil they can charge what they like and guess what ? they can because needs must and theres never anytime to waste with oil companies so they will pay out to get the job done . my mates got a machine shop they charge £65.00 per hour .

I thought 30 quid an hour was bad!  :o

£65 per hour is a fair price for highly skilled labour. To make one off bits even on cnc machines takes time and they have to pay overheads for stuff like tooling machine maintenance tax lighting heating etc. The cost of materials also astronomical at the moment too!

Put it this way a plumber round here charges that so it aint bad really.

So what did they quote? I reckon about £900 let us know!  ;)

This was a very rough ball park figure, upwards of £800 :o :o depending on exact amount of materials used and exact design (amount of work) of yokes and fork brace! so not far off with your guesses.
 Maybe its true what they say about yorkshire folk (I do like value for money);D  or maybe I'm still living in the late 80's (happy day's ;)) but this shocked me somewhat. What I found with a lot of firms was their bread and butter was production runs and small batches so they either refused to do one offs or the money they would make in the time it would take to do one offs made the prices stupid.
Anyway I may have found a small firm willing to do some of what I need  :) and the bit that made the smile bigger £25 an hour ;D (far more realistic) they aren't on the doorstep but we can't always have our cake. Just need to pop and see them now. 

Know what you mean. I do all my own work (where poss) on everything as paying other people is too expensive and often not happy with the quality.

Just to make one thing clear this is not a recommendation, I haven't had any work done by these chaps and as yet I haven't seen any of their work!!

hi hm i spoke to a mate off mine today he is a sparks and does lot off work around kirbymoorside and he says aand engineering are turning out decent work so that sounds good hope this helps
