Title: Baddons Trike

(http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/1549/1000392ww5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

This is a June 06 B & I Engineering 3 seater 1600VW. It has been heavily modified since I got it with an all new FAT front end (180mm tire and 48mm forks;D) New longer light bar including speakers in light shells. 480W stereo system (2 speakers on front light bar and 2 in rear body work) with waterproof Remote RF controller on a bracket on bars (clips of for security) and a Cd stereo mounted under riders seat in a steel waterproof box. The top box was to my own design, as were the higher than stock seat backs and 3 point rear belts. I latter added the centre race harness for my two year old who loves nothing better then to be collected from nursery on the trike. Add in a show plate with my nickname and a few other bits and pieces.

I'm having gearbox changed next week while in England on business to a higher ratio one as currently I'm all out at 72, so on MW I use a lot of expensive stuff...

Expensive stuff? -you run it on champagne?
Probably cheaper actually.
Very tidy machine Baddon. It might be a factory build but you've put enough graft into it to make it your own. If you want to email us a slightly longer write up & some more pics, (including close ups of interesting details & a shot of you with it), we'll happily bung it in the Motors, 3 Wheels section of the site. Having recently taken over the reins a little more from Professor Yoda, creator & janitor of the site, we need all the practice we can get!

Baddon, how long you in our neck of the woods for? And what dates?

We jet off to Spain (wife's 40th) but brother in law is house sitting, so you could crash here?

Pm, email or give me a shout.  I know we'll be away but 'ma maison est votre maison' old chap.

My Sleeper is in the back yard.  You could take it on your way and sleep over at B & I if it helps.  Get in touch.

New risers on handlebars to bring them nearer to me by 2" (myarms were being pulled out and on corners I could Only pull one side so was always sore in sholders after a decent ride)  DONE and its like someone fitted power steering while I was not looking 8)

New longer light bar with additional mounts for two more headlights.

New stero system including the following:-
1 Sony Head unit with single CD with MP3 input and capable of playing MP-Cd's (more storage up to 10 Cd worth)
4 Waterpfoof Marine AV speakers suposedly 5" but barely fitting inside a 6" bates headlight ??? some modification (read butchering) needed to get to fit.
1 aireal for boats (no sticky out ariel stalk)
1 waterproof RF remote for stero designed for Jetskies so no wiring and no line of sight required and no problem with wet, rain etc.
2 Nr 6" bates head lights to match the ones on my front light bar to house two of the new speakers.
1 Can of black multi surface pait to paint speakers as they are boat fiberglass cream at moment but are designed to be painted.

2 New rear mudguards as original ones had damage when the fiberglass broke and light unit fell out and swung around to mark the fiberglass.

New gear linkage bushings to see if I can get 2nd gear without ending up in Reverse or 4th by mistake.

I will post photos as I go so you can all see how I get on botching it up and having to do it again and again ???

Modifying speakers to get them to fit into Headlamps

(http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/3173/1001224vz4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

(http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/4413/1001226jc1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

New headlamp with guts removed to show the empth shell
(http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/8386/1001227sa5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

As you can see the speaker just does not fit inside the shell, so a little modification is required!!
(http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/7955/1001228ui4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

This shows in true Blue Peter Style one I prepared earlier to show how much shoulder had to be removed to allow the speaker to slip inside the shell most of the way so the lid can close and leave the speaker held firmly in place.

(http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/7465/1001229lj6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

This is how I did the butchering, I turned the speaker against the grinder disc to remove the shoulder.

Stero box now mostly made and ready for locating for drilling mounting holes and welding bolts to inside of box.

(http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/9826/1001272rl3.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Stero in box and with front panel down to allow CD to be changed
(http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/8105/1001273lz4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Stero in box with front panel up as in normal mode
(http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9859/1001274rc0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Box in position with lid in place
(http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/5135/1001276ta5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Stero wired up and checked to see if it w*rks ( IT ALL DOES  :P)
(http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9199/1001277pd9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Cable gromits that will seal up waterproof but only come in grey so ou with the multi surface paint again and they are ready to install
(http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/3654/1001279ga4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

So now need side holes drilled to allow wires in, bottom bolts welded after holes drilled, top tapped and mounted, front trap door made, hinge installed and magnet closser installed, powder coated then instlled in trike, cable grommits fitted and cabels installed, top mounted. ::)

Tall order.

Tomorrow night we bleed the breaks with a mechanic friend.

OK that was the 1st set of main mods, the second set of mods done this winter from Dec 07 to Jan 08

Front wheel out and speedo and brake cable/hoses disconnected
(http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/4749/1000888bn0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Forks out looking very weedy next to there replacement 8)
(http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/7343/1000890vy0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Same goes for tyre 8) 8)
(http://img481.imageshack.us/img481/6650/1000891my5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Side view of tyre, new tyre is a larger diameter so it has a different speedo drive supplied, hope its more accurate than the last one ::)
(http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/8105/1000892iz1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Headless trike :o
(http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/417/1000894bk5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

This is as far as I got with all wiring removed from light bar and new light bar trial fitted:- It needs extra holes drilled to allow me to hide speaker wires and also main fitting holes elongated to get it to line up.
(http://img481.imageshack.us/img481/3461/1000896kr1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

w*rk to do:-

Get stainless light bar drilled and adjusted:- neighbour 2 doors up can do this as hes a metal w*rker from his house.
Get new taper bearings for headstock as one collapsed when I removed it (wonder is this anything to do with all the wheelies I'v been pulling lately, cause its done my fork seals again ::))
Get new stearing lock stop bolts as they are a bigger size than last set as its a heavier front end

Rewire and reassemble, might get a set of new indicators as existing set are not the nicest looking and wires are marginally short anyway so if I have to rewire I may as well get a set I'm happier with.

So w*rk is under way, will have all parts on Monday then its a few evening w*rk till its ready for the road ;D

Title: Re: Baddons Trike
Post by: baddon on February 27, 2008, 11:23:26 PM
At last most of the bits are here and my back is improving so I actually got some w*rk done:-

(http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6516/1000346rw7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

New light bar final fitted and all wiring extended and re connected (and w*rking ;))
New slabyolks in, forks fitted and front wheel fitted aith all its spacers, spedo drives etc.

Still have to do front breakes, refit handlebars, reroute throttle and foreward controls, refit tank and body and seats.
Almost forgot that pesky rear fog light wiring while I have good access to front end.

One or two small fiddly bits to sort yet but at least the trike is sitting on its own three wheels again.

I'm well pleased with the new wider front end 8)

Progress at last:- new front wheel in with mudguard fitted.
(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/5787/1000371ns5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Break disc side
(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/2065/1000372mc9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Newly created by my own hand rubber bottom to extend mudguard.
(http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/1007/1000373nf8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

New rear shocks with one of the old removed shocks (in yellow)
(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/4885/1000375ut6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

New shock in place
(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/4182/1000376qz4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Compleated front end

These you have already seen.

The finished trike taken in similar position to my avator pics

(http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/1549/1000392ww5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

As for a write up on the B & I trike, well what can I say, a new trike for just over 6k, built to my spec. It was ready for me to drive away the day I collected it and came with a towing frame so If going to a show I can two trike, leave it off and drive home.

The trikes are well put together, esp the Engineering. Only complaint is the wiring is not the tidiest, it all works and Tony (trike builder) can tell you on phone what every color wire does and goes from and too. Tony is so laid back its unreal, so if you are odering a trike from him just take compleation date with a couple of spoons of salt, Mine was 6-8 weeks late and it was a 6 month lead it when I ordered it.

The layout of the bars, pedels and seats really should be tried, I had to have bars brought back 2" nearer me, I am having foot controls moved away by 1 " and back rest added to give a better riding position on my 3 seater.

It should be noted that the 2 seater has the rider about 2-3 inches farther away from front, this means its a streatch to gear lever, Bars are further away and no back rest as standard. So make sure you get it built to suit you.

There are a great riding trike for a great price so check out his RARELY updated web site to see the trikes

http://www.vwtrikes.co.uk/index2.html

Dont leave a message on message board as he never checks it.

B & I are a one man band -Tony- who builds good value VW 1600 trikes. If its your thing check him out and make sure you tell him where u got his name as I am always thinging of my next mod ;)

Rim is a Yamaha 3 spoke marked 17xMT 5.50 DOT with only one disc on RHS, it does look like you could put a disc on both sides.

Tire is definatly 180mm wide give or take a mm or two ( I measured it)
Its a Continental 180 / 55 ZR 17.

I'd keep the Trike but loose the rider, the Little Irish Elf.  He spoils what otherwise would be a cracking machine.  :o :D :o ;D

Baddon, been to see Tony and filled your new gearbox full of iron filings...............................

The new fatter tow frame to cope with the new tire. I actually bent the last one on a bumpy road so this one is considerable meatier. Also the last one was for the previous narrower tire. As such this new tire would not fit into it.

This is the hole in bottom of frame that the pin goes through. I came up with the design after seeing a picture of the BOOM tow frame in a 1" sq pic. I dont like the idea of towing by pulling the front wheel only as it puts a lot of pressure on the forks. This way I pull the frame of the trike and the front wheel sits on the two plates, just touching front one first so as forks are slightly compressed. This way the trikes suspension works to give trike a smooth ride with front fork doing little to no work.

I've seen a similar set-up on a VW trike being towed to the Shepton Mallet show, but can't remember what make it was. Is that towing lug a standard fitting on Boom trikes then? Presumably you have lugs on the towing frame to ratchet-strap the front wheel in place?

As for lugs on BOOM as standard, not a clue, vut they are easy enough to weld on.

There is NO need to ratchet the front wheel on, see it in action below. The frame acting as pivot point has the entire front end keeping wheel in place. To get front wheel out you would have to put towing vehicle into a negitive G dive.

Finished and painted, showing it in use.
