Have any of you seen the pst on the NABD forum where they are using a push pull twist grip note left handlebar to operate a bike gearbox gear change (as old scooters)?

This is what we are going to try for Shane but just wondering about getting clutch lever to move with the twist grip same as the scooters did. Anyone know of anything that has a combined twist grip and lever?

Never even thought about doing that. The scooter I remember with this setup was in 1969 so I doubt there are many of them kicking about now, anyone know when they changed or do they still have the left twistgrip change? Was it Vespa's as well?

Just thought a bit more about this, the scooter I rode that had this setup was an Li 150(?) and if my memory serves correctly it wasn't a straight push/pull up and down but had positions for the gears. Can someone tell me if I have that wrong and a scotter setup would work for a 5 speed bike change (i.e. straight up/down returning to same position)?

im not sure about the clutch aswell but using a twin cable twist grip could do up motorbike gears as the lever returns to central position after each change, it would only require a bracket to hold the cables and somthing to attach the cables to the gear lever. its a bloody good idea that nabs ;)

its a big load of hassle cables stretch you will spend your whole life adjusting it i got a couple of spare klick o tronik gear shifters buttons on handle bars easy to fit never go wrong currently well over 700 pounds to buy may sell one if it helps pm me with your phone number .... you could pay quite a bit for scooter clutch / shifter and its a crock of s**teeee compared to mine i use it on my bike had one fitted to last 15 bikes ive owned never missed a beat as seen at basingstoke

When my brother had his first moped back in 1972,3 ....that also had a clutch and twistgrip gear selector. It was one of those bright yellow puch's,with a steel pressed frame,and a yellow and chrome tank. :-\ :-\ 

Hold on, slow down, the push pull throttle isn't my idea or design, I saw it on the NABD forum here http://forum.disabledbiker.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=5410 (http://forum.disabledbiker.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=5410) thought it a great idea and well worth a go.

I know a kliktronic would be a better option but the money isnt there for one of those. Know what you are saying about cable stretch Stumpy but if we get some decent cables we should be able to minimise that (cant help thinking of those cables they used to steer that Gears of War trike).

if you go the cable route  ,nabs,,  cable - tec  at sutton in ashfield  are the very helpfull chaps.. we used to get 12 metre gear selection cables made by the for the  duple 425 coach,s.. practically nil stretch in 12 metre,s

i converted an intruder to lambretta left bar twist gearchange and clutch lever i used 2 clutch cables and had to mess about with the length of the linkages to get it right and he said it took a bit of getting used too if i remember it cost £65 brand new from a racing scooter place at edlington near me if wanted will see if they are still going and get a number for you

Madron did the scooter gear have positions for gears or was it straight up down? Think with using it you have answered my question anyway cos it must have worked :)

One of the early Puch mopeds (the ones that look like a bike and not a scooter ) has the twist grip gear change I had one about 25 years ago and was real fun learning to use the twist after foot change...not sure of the model but they are Yellow & chrome bikes...hope this is of some use?...Voodoo....

hi yes it clicked into each gear when clutch lever pulled in  and stayed there but it took some fiddling too get it to work properly as i remember
will see if the guy still doin scooter stuff and try and get a number for you

Just been having a look at the scooter ones and it is different operation to what I was thinking of, the Lambretta ones use rods and linkages rather than cables. Will have a closer look before deciding I think.

On a scooter change is the twist grip locked until the clutch is pulled in? Just imagining it changing gear turning into bends by mistake.

I have downloaded a scooter manual so can see how they work now. Clever buggers weren't hey :)

Cabby has reminded me of suicide shift as an option as well now. Think we will get Shane on the bike and see what would have to go where.
