A Volksrod is a radically customised VW Beetle. A bit more than your average "Cal Look" Beetle, they're basically hotrods but built from German rather than American or British stock. They're usually fenderless & roof chopped. Loony picked up a standard '64 model several years ago & added it to his pending projects pile, but time & money haven't allowed it, so young Archie's bought it from him. He runs a lowered VW Golf, but fancied something more radical, so will be tackling the bug under Loony's watchful eye -a good way to pick up some useful metal working skills. After unbolting the bodyshell from the floorpan, Archie set about removing the rotten floors, leaving just the "spine" of the original car.

With the old metal gone, it was time for the new. Just about every panel of a V Dub's available as a repair piece now, so Archie procured a pair of new floors & Loony soon had them welded to the spine.

tackled the beam / axle adjusters today. these allow you to dial in the ride height you're after by dropping the front end. Spensive CSP adjusters, worth it though Archie's Volksrod They;re grooved each side and go together like so Archie's Volksrod one manky beam Archie's Volksrod Starting to clean it up Archie's Volksrod Axle adjuster goes like so - Archie's Volksrod

We needed to cut a slot so the threaded bit can spin the leaves round to allow the ride height to change Archie's Volksrod Slots cut Archie's Volksrod With the adjusters bolted on Archie's Volksrod The beam had crimps / dents on the top and bottom holding the inner beam / leaves in place. We cut these out to allow the inner beam to spin freely and I then made some fill plates / bits and Mr Welder welded em in. Archie's Volksrod Just need to clean the welds up and jobs a good un. On the 17" steels with quite tall profile tyres it left about 2 to 3" under the beam so pretty low. I'm going to run dropped spindles as well, so expecting this to lay the beam on the ground.

Good work Archie. So does that lower the front end without compromising the ride?
