Yep a clear plug is used to see what colour the ignition process is.
I doubt that it's the plugs at all sound like you need to check your carbs ASAP.

Can anyone tell me if the item circled is the neutral switch?
I only ask 'cos when I removed it to check it's servicability, all the oil pi**ed out of the hole!?!?!?!
The manual is lacking in direction as to where the neutral switch is?
