I can give you chapter and verse on legality if you wanted. I'll jstt say worse case scenario is that a disgrunteed cop, or VOSA officer ,can put you on a 4 wheel lift recovery at the point where he stops you  and send you for a fresh MOT to prove the fault has been corrected .Not that you need an MOT for a pre 60 vehicle nor are they actually required for an MOT

i spent an afternoon ,mocking up, the mudguards i,d planned for ,EMILY, only for them to end up half way up the garden where they landed when i got disheartened with them 
now i,m unshure what to do ,,

if you had skinny x-plys i'd say not bother, but they're big old radials which will pick up stones etc lots of spray so i'd fit them.
