Recently the old coil on my trike started leaking oil so i got a new one. Then i noticed that it gets very hot when the trike is running How hot should a coil get is this normal?
Im wondering if its because there is no ballast resistor in place and i have a coil that requires one if thats the case can i just get a coil that does not require a resistor.

Cheers Dan

Hmmm very hot sounds too hot to me.
The coil will get warm during normal operation (electric generates heat), does sound like there are too many volts going through it though.
I agree that checking the coil would be the first place to start, you can then either replace the coil with a straight 12v version or retro fit a resistor.

it sounds like youre running a 9v ballast resist coil on 12v  coils do get warm but not hot any coil that has leaked is about to go ,,BANG,, and believe me they do i had one go up infront of me  Shocked Shocked.

and the oil that leaks from them is highly corrosive!!!!!!!! so get it cleaned up and washed away  ASAP

DO NOT GET IT ON YOURE SKIN ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ITS  EVIL,,,,,,

i think youre best just running a straight  12v coil

well just about any 12v coil should do  but ive fitted an old delco one of a mk1 cavalier its a small black cased one with a metal frame around it its smaller than the tin can beer/coke can size and easier to hide  i really only used it because i had it and new it was good (its been my get out of trouble/test coil for years)

somewhere on here ther,s some part numbers for 12v coils  ,posted by tbone ,,i think  under reliant service parts

                                   hope this helps ..
