Ok so this is interesting. My Jag needs 185 / 15 tyres. They are full profile so there is no 65 / 70 (profile) etc like on a modern tyre. So getting hold of tyres is a pain. Most commercial places won’t list them, other than hardwall van tyres, which are not suitable.
So you are forced to use the “classic” tyre places… Whilst I agree we should support classic factors I am a little disturbed by their pricing and practices.
So there is a very big one down south, I called them and they quoted me £107 + Vat and fitting per tyre, so I need 4. That’s getting towards £600, by the time the disposal and other bits are complete. Oh and they are to busy to fit me in for over a week and they are 50 miles away.
So I had the idea of getting a local tyre place to get me the classic tyres I need. Vredeistein Sprint Classics.
“No, No no” said the local place they have an exclusivity contract on them, as do all the other 185 15’s you want.
For a period of time the tyre manufactures will only supply the classic tyre places with the tyres… I asked the local place to confirm that the exclusivity time was still in place. Turns out it just ended….
So I have got the same £107+ Vat tyre for …. £80+ vat. So my total cost is £400. That’s a saving of £150+
So I strongly advise if you get new tyres for your car / bike / trike you check with your local place before going to a classic tyres specialist.
Oh and my local place has the correct centre lock machine to balance wire wheels, they even had binding tape for the spokes and a copper hide…
I hope this post saves others £150.
