Hi, I need to replace one of the oil sump bolts as the thread is stripped in the case. should I use a heli coil or tap out and replace with a bigger bolt please?
Either way does anyone know the size of the original and what I should replace it with please.
The engine is a Reliant 850 and I have a new sump and gasket on order.
Thanks Archie

diff = 5/16 unf same as rocker cover if my memory serve,s me correctly,
g/box top i think is 1/4  but check if its fine thread ,,,if so  its unf again ,, if,, its coarse thread it could be unc,, sometimes when manufacturers tapped ally castings they went for a coarse thread as it wont strip as easy as a fine thread when in soft metal,,

Someone recently asked what sized bolts are used on Reliant engines. Can't find the thread now, but while perusing our extensive filing system, (a big heap of paperwork in the spare bedroom), this morning, I came across this list, sent to me a few years ago by Mr Flap when we were ordering parts for his orange "Flapster" trike.
Thought it might be of use to fellow Reliant triketeers.

Timing cover

Bolts
1/4" unc x 2"   2 off
1/4" unc x 3/4"   5 off
Nyloc nuts
1/4" unc   2 off

Cylinder head

Nuts
3/8" unf   6 off

Gearbox

Top plate      1/4" unc x 3/4"   8 off
Top gearbox to engine      5/16" unc x 3"   2 off

Thermostat housing

1/4" unc x 3/4"   3 off

Distributor clamp

1/4" unc x 1/2"   1 off

Carburettor to inlet manifold

5/16" unc x 1/2"   2 off

Inlet & exhaust manifolds etc

5/16" unc

Do you know what thread the bobbins on the gearbox are 3/8 something Huh

Front Engine mounting rubbers and gearbox rear mounting rubbers are the same at 3/8 UNF .
.
Maybe the new sections I am creating on my website might be of help , which include Reliant Workshop Manual containg info regarding threads and quantity ;
https://sites.google.com/site/fifersrelianthintsandtips/workshop-parts-manuals/workshop-owners-manuals-with-indexes

Gearbox Front mounting studs to engine plate are 5/16 UNC/UNF
