Save up you pennies (and pounds) as the Goodwood Festival of Speed is coming up, near Chichester in Sussex.

Its not a cheap event (esp on the Sat and Sunday), but what you can get to see is literally world class, and its easy to spend a whole day (10 hours) there, so if you kinda calculate what it costs per hour......................

Friday costs £37, which is about the same as a big UK drag meeting. (2011 British Car Grand prix £57)
Sat  is £53. (2011 British Car Grand prix £77)
Sun is £53. (2011 British Car Grand prix £141)

If you watch this video the poor lass that says she's late for the press day, and is rescued by the hero in the rally skoda, is actually on a road known as Princes Road which leads (only) to Goodwood House 1/4 a mile behind her, which kinda suggests that her and rally-man have both just come from the press event!!!!! Doh!
(believe everything the media tells you?Huh  Grin)
The building you get a glimpse of when he pulls up if Goodwood Cricket Club (google map it)...... I'll get me coat ............

I've wanted to go for years but it always clashes with something - this year we'll be in France.

Taken today, Thurs 30th.

Thursday is set up / scrrutineering etc for the competitors, so no are on the hill (hence the static photos) but it gives a bit of chance to see some of the vehicles, as others will arrive during the evening.
Thurday now has whats called the Moving Motor Show, which means the hill is used for strate-from-crate factory mobiles (some rather exotic) to be test driven by those who book up etc etc.
This restricts access to the competitors wishing to unload, whereas in the days before the Motor Show thingy, vehicles would be arriving all day, with the site would only be open to exhibitors, competitors and few other souls only, with some of the drivers mooching about (had Peter Fonda ride his Easy Rider copy dressed in civvies past me only a yard away the other year).

Firday has the first timed runs and demo runs going through all the classes of vehciles, and the Red Arrows usualy make an appearance.

Each year, the Festival has a feature out side of Lord March's front door on the lawn (well you would wouldn't you, beats a hanging basket I guess).

So can you tell what it is this year?

Cummins diesel of 1931 - not quite your normal cummins diesel.

The car qualified last but finished 13th as it did the whole of the Indy 500 without stopping......

Built in 1911, 6 cylinders of 9.8 litres, this car won the very first Indy 500, 100 years ago in 1911.

See the rear view mirror - it was a world's first, on this actual car. Back then the cars carried a mechanic as well, so with being a single-seater, to make sure the driver could know who was behind him, the mirror was fitted.

The 1971 March 711.
Aerodynamic input from was a gent called Frank Costin (who you might say). He went on to be the co-founder of a little ol' company called Cosworth Marcos with Jem Marsh.

His brother Mike co-formed Cosworth.

Thanks for putting me right on that Brock  Wink  (I had taken info from a flyer on the car which looks like it was produced by www.stp.eu  - even those that are meant to know don't always get it right - tut tut)

"March Engineering" took its name from the founders Max Mosley, Alan Rees, Graham Coaker and Robin Herd.
