Hello guys

i cant seem to find anywhere who sell clamps - its looks like you have to make them.

I'm new to triking and have just got into triking a xv535 (bolt on) - i've made my clamps from the helpsheet on this site (thanks)

but i was wondering if anyone would be interested if pressed ones (no welds) to fit to reliant axles so the only weld is the clamp to the frame.

I'm not selling anything but was going to get a mould made and wanted to know if anyone has ever looked for something like this or would be interested in the idea?

Hi Mav -sorry, is that a male Mav or female Mav -can I call you Mavis?  Smiley Welcome to the forum.
I'm pleased we were able to help with the clamp design. Always looking for more tech articles to add to the site if anyone wants to send anything in -it's very often the basic stuff that readers want to know about, but are afraid to ask, for fear of looking silly. We've all got to start somewhere & we try to share as much info as we can.
There are several people here who produce versions of the disc brake caliper mounting brackets I first came up with to convert a Reliant axle from drums to discs. They seem to sell. Maybe not in huge numbers, but if the price is reasonable, they can take some of the hassle out of doing the job. So there's probably a similar market for ready made axle clamps. If you can afford to have them sat on a shelf in the shed, you might only sell a few sets, but they'd go eventually. Ebay will sell them quicker of course. It's hardly a unique design, but like the caliper plates, a mention of the site in the ad would be nice.
We usually use heavy gauge ERW tubing for our trike frames, so you'd have to make them from a similar thickness steel. 4mm would be good. They'll also need a locating tab to bolt to a matching tab on the frame to stop the axle sliding or turning in the clamps. If that's not supplied, you ought to point it out in your ad as not every prospective builder is experienced enough to think of such things.
If you go ahead with production, we're more than happy for you to advertise them here.

thankyou very much for the reply and tips. Yeh the first set i made were from 3mm tabs and 4mm thick tube.

Was going to go with 4mm or 5mm for pressed plates to be on safe side but i will have to think about how to add the tab - perhaps a weld would be needed for this part.

I still dont undertstand the tab and what you connect it to. I have so far just welder the clamps to the frame so far. Though i think my father understands it. You dont have a pic available with this tab on a clamp on the actual axle connected do you? i know it could be a long shot lol.

Mav's short for maverick - just a nick name - real name is James

Thanks very much for your help again and will be sure to mention it. As i'm looking at building a number of trikes with a reliant axle, i will probably go ahead with the pressed clamp idea and weld tabs on.......eventually.

James

Sorry James -I shouldn't post here late at night when I'm half asleep -the tabs bolt to matching ones on the axle tube, not the frame. That locates the axle in the clamps.
If you check out the frame building chapters in the Motors, 3 wheels section of the main site, there'll probably be a piccie of the clamps there. If not, have a trawl back through my own trike build thread here in the Trike Tech section.

Very true. I seem to spend my life making mounting tabs & brackets for our various projects. Just simple shapes, but hack sawing them, cleaning them up with a handfile or grinder, rounding off the ends to make them look nice, drilling mounting holes etc, can easily take up a couple of hours. Our local hotrod shop buys in boxes of ready made tabs from the States in various styles & sizes. Time is money to them & it makes more sense to grab a couple of brackets from the stock room than spend all afternoon making them.
I'm sure there's a market for the basics of bike/trike/hotrod building if you can produce them cheap enough.

Hi Mav, i'm sure as Manky said, you'd have an out let for the axle clamps as it would take a little bit of work out of the project for builders so the time can be spent on .....eating more jaffa cakes?

If you do have joy with this idea,i'd be interested in buying a set off you  as i'm looking to start my project this winter once i've finished my numerous jobs around the house.

Nice to hear from you mate ,good luck.
