Measuring car wheels??

Got a pair of Ford Y wire wheels for my Panthertrike project... I was told they were 17". As I'm currently trying to get the Pop finished all funds are being diverted to that so a pair of crossplys are out of the question at the mo
so I thought Ahha I'll use bike tyres...... well a mate has given me an old 17" bike tyre and guess what the rim is too big for it but an 18" bike tyre looks like a perfect fit... so how do you measure a car rim

hi shaun,
stole this from northants website.
Rim Diameter
The diameter of the wheel's bead seat where the tyre sits, NOT the overall diameter of the wheel.
Rim Width
The width of the wheel, measured from bead seat to bead seat

Bike tyres on a car rim are a no no.
Rim profile is different and you risk the tyre jumping from the rim. It's also a prob for SVA, MOT and traffic cop i suspect too!
Save for them Crossply Tyres!!!
