Does it turn when cooled down? if not its probably buggered the big ends and mains, the parts are cheap for them and relativly easy to re-build,also if you go that route you can up the cc's for little money,or go for a full on stroker motor!!

Morning, What's happened is we picked up a vdub as a project, knew it was a non runner and on trying to get it going last weekend we found its seized, Tried turning the engine by jacking up one side and turning a wheel whilst in gear and its seized solid, very little oil on the rodney either (dipstick)lol

take it out of gear and try turning crank with socket and bar, the gearbox may be seized

Do as previous post but take out spark plugs and pour some diesel/oil down the bores the day before and leave to soak. Make sure that you have disconnected ignition so it does not try and start/run. These engines can work even after being left for years. A new set of barrels and pistons are cheap, as low as £100.00. so don't worry if it's buggered.

When I seized the engine on mine,we filled it up with oil and away I went again. Unfortunately the coach I put in the ditch in the process, took a little more work to get that going again.

Hey andy,I'm not over familiar with the internals of a vdub engine either...don't think they are oil seals, there metal, someone has suggested there the thrust washers off the rocker shaft, find it hard to imagine how such big parts have got to the oil strainer down the oil galleries... hopefully I've got use of a large garage in the next few weeks, big enough for the bug and thw trike, will make working on them a lot more easy and comfy

Not sure about the two on the left but the one on the right looks like a penny to me. Seriously though, it does look like a thrust washer, as seen here on the diagram. The engine I used for this is a 1967 1200cc btw. whos the muts nuts with vw engines??? Download bmp here.
