A couple of pedestrians are approaching a pedestrian crossing on my left, they are about 2 steps back from the kerb, he is looking to his left ,not at me .A car is approaching the crossing from the other direction. As I am about 10 yds from the crossing, the other car slows to let the pedestrians across (I see it out of the corner of my eye) As I go across the crossing in front of the pedestrians,he (the pedes)starts shouting thet I shouldve stopped . Am I right or wrong? Are we supposed to give all pedestrians on ,or even near the kerb of a crossing the right of way?

I'm sure that the Peds are meant to wait until both lanes have stopped before crossing.

according to the highway code
19. Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.
i would say you were in the right according to the above which i just got from the goverment page

I allways thought you had to claim your right of way by standing at the kerb
