I still have some bits left so I could do something. I will look for another shaft anyway. I should have just tacked the bits and then welded them away from the shaft. I'll know better next time.

I have done a bit more welding while it has been nice, but I am only getting a couple of hours a day as it is just too hot. Getting there slowly.

As someone said to me recently `you may as well take your time, do it right and how you want it to be`. Looking good mate, i can foresee a shortage of vw engines once you perfect your adaptation.

I dunno. I'm still chasing another driveshaft. I have a spare CX500 one which I might have a go at if it does work out.

Ive been watching this with interest, always fancied doing a front engined vw hot rod type thing! Our trike had no cooling tinwear on it when we got it, my only tip is to make sure your inlet manifolds are long enough to not transfer the heat to the carbs. Ours used to boil off the fuel from the float chambers!! But your running a single carb on a long manifold, so just ignore my rambling!!

No worry. I was thinking about two SU carbs, but if the heating prob is that bad I might stay with a single jobbie. I was looking at the freezing that sometimes happens with long inlets, and as I have to fit an oil cooler anyway, I was looking at getting some copper tube and running it from the engine oil outlet to the cooler, via being wrapped around the carb inlet. Any idea's?

I think twin Su's would be good, the manifolds we had were low profile type 3 ones, so only about 3.5" tall, taller ones should be fine. I would be concerned about the inlet iceing up, as it does on a stock lump in a bug and thats out of any direct air flow. I like the idea of using copper hard oil lines spiralled around the inlet, should take the chill off it!

I had a picture on disc of a 1600 VW with Capri box, but I don't know where its gone now. I'm sure I saw it for sale in one of the bike mags a few years back.

I'm going to look at another type1 gearbox tomorrow, and if its knackered I will definitely be having it. Makes a change, eh?
