normally ya fits ya prop after you have done frame to what length ya want and then mates it up to the axle once engine and box is all fitted in ,premature cutting of prop could lead to slight hicups methinks  just my tenpennith worth as i know nuffink  |

As Harley Gazz said you make the prop fit the trike. If you look on my trike thread we have roughly done the frame and haven't even started on the prop but when it is done it will be about 8 inches I think. I'll go and measure the gap now.

Yup just as I thought, just a fraction over 8 inches gap for the prop.

I'm assuming you're building a hardtail? -with a swinging arm frame the prop obviously needs to be able to move with the suspension travel. Even with a hardtail, there's a certain amount of vibration from the engine & flex in the frame. I'm no expert but I wouldn't recommend a solid prop -one without universal joints. Check the thread on SaddleBags' trike build, (Vauxhall Chevette auto), & you'll see he used a rubber "donut" in place of the UJs. Basically a big rubber block in the middle of the prop that can soak up any movement. If your solid prop runs even slightly out of true it'll bugger up the bearings in your gearbox & diff. The shortest prop I've done was literally the 2 UJs welded back to back. There's a limit to how short you can make your hardtail anyway, as you need room to sit on the thing! |

Tony id make the jig/frame 1st m8 as it been mentioned above youwont know the exact length until axle/gearbox/engine are set in there places its alomst lke trying to work out how and where the gearstick will go before the frame's in place |
