Driving home from visiting my brother, Brock in Marlborough, Wilts today, Taz & I drove past 2 figures in a field -then did a sharp U turn & went back for a second look.
Morecambe & Wise. 8 foot tall. Stood in the middle of a field.

-why?

why not ? if you had come away through the village you would have seen a fifteen foot King John sat on his throne in the middle of a field. Another field obviously, you wouldn't want them together would you.

there's also a large black and white cow in a field just the other side of Hungerford, but that's a bit more subtle

You think there's a team of itinerant statue makers wandering around Wiltshire, scattering monoliths at random about the countryside?

These Morecambe and Wise figures have been there for years - where have you always been looking - maybe at the road or the strawberry fields??!  So far as I know, these were created by Mr Munroe of Hungerford, who lives on that land, and whose father was Johnny Morris.  He made figures as promotional displays ie outside butchers etc.  I think the Morecambe and Wise were made for a London show and he obviously just kept them.  I went to school with his son, Joe Munroe, who also lives somewhere around Hungerford.
Hope this answers the question - don't you think they're a bit spooky close up??! Grin

Hiya Baggs  Wink
Yeah, I find it best to watch the road when I'm driving. Been vaguely aware they were there but never investigated further. Is that the same guy who made the fibreglass jolly butcher type chaps you sometimes see stood outside shops? There's one outside the butchers next to my lock-up in Basingstoke. He got kidnapped a couple of years ago. The Police launched a major hunt for him & he was eventually found in someone's living room. Still outside the shop every day but now he's chained to the railings for his own safety.
The Johnny Morris? Cool!  Smiley
