SVA Changes "posted by Sooze @ BC"

post made by the all knowledgeable Sooze over @ BC
First off, don't panic, the MSVA is safe, but there are changes afoot for the car boys and girls though. In a nutshell, come March 2009 (the proposed date of change) the SVA for cars is being renamed as the Individual Vehicle Approval scheme to bring it into line with a new Europe type approval scheme for production cars and low volume bodied vehicles. Although at the moment VOSA don't forsee any major changes to the current SVA inspection for 'one off' cars.
I'm assured that motorcycles and motorcycle derived tricycles (there is a possibility that there may be a small change in a trikes maximum mass and dimensions sometime in the future though) will be unaffected by these changes and the MSVA will continue to exist with no proposed inspection changes, the changes are for bodied vehicles and trailers only and not bikes or trikes. And thats from VOSA's press office yesterday.
And here's the latest from the DfT today;
DfT consultations
As a result of changes to the EC framework directive the DfT have started to draft revisions to national type approval requirements for cars and new requirements for all bodied vehicles that will require changes to the existing national requirements for Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) which will now be called Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) and also UK Low volume Type approval (LVTA).
If anyone wants a copy of the DfT's Press release leaflet pm me ok, as its to big to download on site, but just to emphasise, this mainly covers production vehicles, Trucks, Coaches, Caravans & trailers etc.

Yeah, the 2009 date's been known on the car sites for a while now. I read it on the National Street Rod Association forum last year sometime, which is why I want to make sure my Pop is sorted before the end of this year. I hope to go for a commercial SVA as the Pop's now a pick up, cos those in the know reckon it's much easier to pass than the car version.

Nah you're not mate. Plenty of people start building stuff without checking out whether they'll be able to get it on the road at the other end. The more info we put out the better informed everyone will be.
