Yup, carry on babbling mate. It's just the sort of info that people are always asking for.  Wink
What may seem blindingly obvious to you could well be a revelation to someone else so post away Sir!  Smiley

This is them sleeved with a solid round bar that i bored out to suit the size of the half shafts and belive it or not both half shafts where a differnt size good ole reliant  Grin
onec i had them bored out to the correct size i simply slid the half shafts into the bars which are now tubes. And welded them up with my mates very good oil filled kick ass stick welder lol at 160 amps  Grin fingers crossed its all going to be strong enough

Mouse, just a bit of info you might find useful, the bloke who did the joining and welding on mine has had plenty of experience doing the same with Escort axles for rally cars and his tried and tested method includes drilling and pinning using engineering dowel then welded in and spun up on the lathe to get it balanced.
Here's a picture of mine so you can see what I mean.

A good lesson to be learned there DONT SOLID WELD A RELAINT AXLE IT DONT LIKE IT
me being a right muppet did it twice hows that for being stupid  Grin Grin two axles knackerd
i know some people weld them and get away with it
this is a mock up of the new tubes and diff in place between the wheels

I internal and external sleeved the remains of the axle tubes with very strong 2" inch ID 5MM wall thick tube a bit OTT but once or should that be twice bitten i ain't taken any chance with another axle breaking i was lucky to survive that last two breaks.

I'm a Postie, not an engineer, but I always try to stress here -SAFETY FIRST. I'd hate anyone to get injured after following our advice, (& I can't afford the lawsuits!), so always better to over-engineer than chance it. If you're not competent to do the job yourself, find someone who is. We pinned the narrowed axle on Flap's orange trike in exactly the same way.

Right carrying on from where i left off  Grin
but before i do ****please read**** This is my build if you are going to copy any of my ideas please check and double check that they are going to do the job for you UNDER no circumstance are MANKY MONKEY MOTORS responsible for anything i do or anything i put on this web site .****
Mick aka mouse
Next job i did was to make a loop to go over the axle for added strength the one thing i did want was to be able to split the diff if i had any problems in the future.
so i machined a solid piece of bar to fit the inside of the tube i was using as my loop.
i made the loop then cut it in half and inserted the machineing piece in the ends of the tube which i then drilled and bolted. I then welded the loop to the axle tube all i have to do now is unbolt the two bolts and i can split the diff Grin

I'd just like to point out, MMMotors do not condone the use of toilet tubes as axles.
