On our way home from the New Year classic car meet today, Taz & I passed this mob in the carpark of the Crooked Billet in Hook, Hampshire. They're the Hook Eagles. Mummers. Morrismen. They were border dancing their way from pub to pub. The black face paint's a traditional part of their costume, originally designed to hide their identities so they could poke fun at the Government of the day in support of "Good King George".

I don't suppose they're very popular with the local pheasant population either. Shocked

Seeing that reminded me of a 'Dance Weekend' we went to at Butlins years ago when the kids were young, I went to folk dance workshops and the girls did various things like tumbling and clowning.  In the evenings we were entertained by Morris and other dance sides and out favourites were the 'Ironmen' from Ironbridge who danced in the same tradition as the ones you saw, with the black faces (the Ironmen also had hobnail boots, great on the dance floor!) and the rags.  They also had fearsome sticks and there was a lot of clashing them together, could have been nasty if they got the rhythm wrong!

Just noticed in the pic they're wearing clogs, maybe it was another side that had the hobnail boots!

I can not believe that these gentlemen would imbibe ale, surely not.
A mate of mine was a morris dancer, he got the p1ss ripped out of him something wicked and often had bruised fingers and knuckles from getting bashed with a stick when him and his morris dancing mates were p1ssed!
There's definately something odd about these morris dancers. No offence meant to any closet morris dancers on this site, you are all probably very good at it and a credity to all of us.>

I like the Megadeath Morrismen who frequent rallies.
They do serious stick bashing, and one of them has eyes that look in two different directions!

Hi Nomad.  Wink
I remember them being on the telly a few times -didn't they do a dance routine with the Two Ronnies?
