it looks bigger in water ! !

i though i should put something onto the pages . it all began with my brothers trike and an urge . i bought a gpz 550 that was in a frame and had most of a wiring loom . after lugging it back to my work i set about trying to get it going which i thought would be tricky a it had been sat in a field for 4 or 5 years but after a lot of swearing it did indeed fire up ( sort o ) it would only fire on 2 cylinders and that was as for as i got with it. now my intention was to build my own frame and put the engine into there but as luck would have it a hardtail z 550 came onto ebay and with a quick cheeky call a deal was made and in no time it was back in my work , and as it goes it too had been sat for several years since last running but had no wiring so i used the loom of of the gpz and by some strange twist of fate it too would only fire on 2 cylinders. as it goes it would spark on all 4 but then after a couple of engine turns it would only fire on cylinders 2 and 3  so we change the cd ignitor but nope that did nothing. so i thought long and hard , then tried a few wires in different configurations but still only 2 cylinders. so i had a brain wave the gpz and the z block were the same block so the timing gear would be the same right ?  WRONG they were different in the fact the z had a mechanical advance mechanism and the gpz a electric one but with a quick dremel and hack saw blade i cut some of the webs out of the way and fitted the gpz timing pick ups into the z and wayhay it was fired on all 4 cylinders. and bloody hell i was releaved .
below is a couple of photos showing the old timing pick ups and the cut out crank case webs and the new  gear form the gpz fitted and good to go

thought i should add a little update to my project , since my last post i have built my jig ( plans came from chopper builders hand book) excellent site , set my frame on it and set about loosing the funny bit in the frame

i cut the section out and with some pipe that was donated from a friend i let in the new bit , the tube had to be turned town as the frame is 25mm pipe and the nearest stock pipe i could get was 26.5 dia . i also tapered the pipe end to allow for as much weld coverage as possible.

i had already welded the original engine mounts onto my jig but had to make new ones due to the cross bar being lower, so i made templates from card board and then cut them out and checked them before welding up proper .
