hey up m8
would 40mm OD ERW tube be to big to use for my new trike build ?? Its the same type of tube you use just bigger diameter
the reason i ask is i have loads of it lol

Hiya Mouse,
What's 40mm in real money? We use 1 inch bore for the main frame & 1 1/2 inch for the top tube, (both with 4mm wall thickness -yeah, I know I'm mixing Imperial & Metric, but Metric was only just starting to be taught when I was at school so I tend to work in whatever's nearest to the measurement I need!
I've thought of doing a trike frame in the 1 1/2 bore tube & wondered if it'd look O.K or too chunky. Not sure. Would be O.K if you were using a bigger car engine, but maybe a little overpowering for a little Reliant. I dunno. Why not try it & see! Don't forget though that being a bigger diameter tube, you won't be able to create as tight bends as you can in smaller tube, so may have to leave more room around the engine for example.
When I did my first trike frame most people were still building them in bike sized tube, which looked very spindly on trikes. Going up to the 1 inch tube kept things in proportion. If you've got loads of 1 1/2 inch, bend a couple of bits & see what it looks like compared to your engine, axle, front end etc. You might find you have to fit chunkier looking forks & yokes or a bigger tank or whatever to keep things properly proportioned.

thanks for all that info very helpful
and I'm pleased to meet a guy who uses the same measurement as me the proper one lol imperial yeah  Grin
40mm equates to just over 1 1/2 inch if i got me sums right  Grin
my engine for the new trike is a ntv 650 so chunky frame ain't gonna look right.So thanks for pointing that out.I have the forks made up I'm using gpz900 stanchions with klr600 tubes and guzzi yokes all polished up.Next question  ;Dim toying with using a jag axle xj6 ish inboard disc one
.Do you or anybody else know if it will work with the ntv650 engine? IE direction/ratio?

No idea. You could try Wynne at JW Motorcycles, (his link's on the main website Links Page. Yoda built his site for him). He builds trikes commercially. Or failing that, you could ask Yoda, behind the scenes webmaster of this 'ere site as well. His BMW bike engined trike's got a Jag back axle. Or ask Desperate Dan, trike builder extraordinare, (his link's on the Links Page too & Yoda built his site for him too!).

Yup, the Yodiemobile.
His yokes were inspired by Vic Jefford's show bikes. Disability exemption -disabled trikes don't have to be MSVA'd.
