need some advice as well from the Manky Monkey Motors Forum Group...one engine was in a car that had a fire if the head was naff, apart from putting it on engineer's bench wot would you say was a tell tale sign that the head may be naff "i now im gonna regret asking this Smiley"

well if its ears got burned off you would notice its hat had slipped down Wink Grin Grin Grin
seriously...have you done compression test? although that may not give true record. best way is to take it off and check it, maybe get it skimmed anyway to be sure. being all alloy there may be distortion in the upper area so check rockerbox seating as well by upturning head with valves out and rockerbox fitted and sealed, partially fill with light oil and look for leaks at gasket area. hope this is of some help Cool

glad you got back ok, you must be well nannied after that.
take care
best wishes from us 2 Grin

"wot would you say was a tell tale sign that the head may be naff"

-if it's got Reliant stamped on it? -JOKING!  Grin
As Pete said, being ally, the heads are prone to warping so probably worth having it skimmed as a precaution anyway. Check it for cracks. Check the valves move freely in their guides -all the obvious things really.
Never met Desperate but chatted to him on the phone a few times. Seems a pleasant enough nutter to me. The supercharged Reliant he was building wasn't to my personal taste but I was watching it with interest cos he approached it's design from a completely different angle from us. Nice to see some variety out there.

Ok gents yer opinions are pretty much as mine easy for me to say now Smiley the engines i have are 1 realto 1 robin i think the realto is 800cc+ ? i forgot to check v5 Despot has it now, robin i think is 750, realto is the burn case Sad that reliant charger 1 that Despot was doing is the one/all parts of it that i now have so it will be all down hill from here on lol "God is hurting to type lol"

It'd take me a week to recover from a cross country trip like that! You couldn't have gone much further to find a motor if you'd tried.
Early Robins were 750cc & supposed to be more tuneable than the later Rialtos, which were 850cc.

Try Rebel Racing's website

http://www.btinternet.com/~rogerv/rebelt.htm

They race Reliants so should have info on tuning them. I was told the 750s are tougher so withstand being tuned better. Don't ask me why. There's no substitute for cubes though. Probably just as easy to just stick the 850 in if it's for normal road use. I've no idea how the gearing of the Escort axle will work out with a Reliant motor & those huge rear wheels but I'm sure Desperate will have worked that out.

You can get different ratio diffs for the escort axle pretty easily. All sorts are available because of its popularity for rallying/ racing.
