I have made a little more progress on my trike project. Unfortunately I miscalculated the ratio of the dif-if I can't find a high speed gearset  for it I will need to start over with a different axle Angry

If anyone can find specific info for this axle  or the numbers cast in the pumpkin housing I would greatly appreciate it. It looks like a Dana Spicer but lacks any of the ID numbers Dana usually has in the webs. It supposedly came from a 71 HD electric golf cart, which would be good, because there were hi speed gears available for that axle.  I need to get exact model info to find those gears and so far I haven't had any luck coming up with it. Any body recognize this axle or have a 71 HD electric golf car they can photograph for me?

By the way, it seems to handle just fine. No wobbles and reasonable steering effort. It is just too d**n slow!

Hello Vern & welcome to the site! That's some seriously big wheels you got there matey!
Why do the newbies always come up with questions I haven't got a clue how to answer?! Never ever seen a golf cart axle in a trike before. Can anyone help out here?
I'm sure you don't want to, but have you considered changing the wheel/tyre size instead to compensate for the gearing?

That's why those wheels are so big! I can't go any bigger without making it look like a John Deere. Besides, those are the largest automotive wheels/tires I could find... anything larger would come from a long haul tractor trailer rig or agricultural equipment!!

This one has come up on other forums, and one answer has been to look for a Suzuki SJ413 jeep axle. Could be a lot easier for you to find in the US.

right thats definatley a dana axle case to get somwhere close to sensible gearing you,ll need to swap the innards for somthing like the dana 44 fitted to the two wheel drive jeep j20 wagoneer! if you open up the back cover and count the teeth on the crown wheel i might be able to help out abit more!

I went to the Dana site and I couldn't find an exact match to this axle. Also the Dana site sez all Dana axles have an ID and model number in the web casting at the back of the pumpkin housing.

I'd LIKE it to be a Dana, but I need to know what model axle it is to get the gears. This axle is also a little weird in that it appears to be upside down but I THINK I have it oriented as the manufacturer intended- there looks to be a vent on top and a drain plug on the bottom as it sits now in my trike. I am told that the gears were probably designed to carry oil up and over...

Overall width is 40" . I don't recall the tooth count but probably wrote it down somewhere when we had the thing apart at the machine shop...

The ring gear is stamped 78 5900 and scribed 0.05 7 11 The ring gear has 49 teeth and the pinion 4

I don't think so.
Were you thinking larger tires to compensate for the gears? What I have on there now are probably as large as I want to go for this set up....
