Ok well today we've been trying to do more stuff on my trike. I've got hold of some ply to make a level floor with to build the frame on, (shed leans a bit). Then after work I put together my axle. The first 2 photos are the shortened axle tubes pressed back into the casing. The original rivets were replaced with 6mm bolts. We had to shorten the bolts to allow room for the driveshafts.

Yes Mousy they are and my language was not great doing the flippin things. I kept dropping the allen key too and that just made matters worse, but I sussed that if you rolled the axle round so that you pushed the bolt upwards then the spring washer on the inside stays in place, then you use 2 fingers and hold the nut in roughly the right place and turn the bolt from the outside. It soon finds the correct thread and tightens. On the nut I also used a ratcheted spanner and it made things a little easier.
Manky's tip - Use a ring spanner with masking tape on one side. Drop the nut into the ring and off you go.
NB He's only just told me this.
The next step was to fit the drive shaft then the aluminium caliper mounting plates and the hubs. The plates were CNC machined by Saddlebags and they retain the bearings in the ends of the axle tubes.

The next few photos are of the brake discs being held in place by the extended wheel studs used for the spacer. We had to use spacers to give enough clearance for the caliper inside the wheel.

We fitted the wheels in place, widened Morris Minor steel wheels with chrome wheel nuts.

Overall width of the axle inc tyres is 58", (148cm)
Ground clearance under the sump should be about 6", (15cm)

wow thats looking good i love them wheels I'm glad its all starting to come together for ya. And my language was choice when i tried to fit them nuts and bolts the air round here was very blue pmsl my cats sat watching me with the paws in there ears |
