Once I've welded it in place it'll produce an oval shaped top tube, lifting the tank clear of the carb. I might weld captive tank mount nuts under the wedge before I fit it.

This odd shaped plate is the carb/bellmouth adaptor. Bolts to the mouth of the SU so I can fit the 3 bolt funnel to the 2 bolt carb.

A piece of the fine mesh Mr Gazzagood so kindly donated. Should keep the bugs out of the carb mouth. I'll simply sandwich it between the carb & bellmouth. As well as a rubber gasket, I may squirt on a little mastic to help seal the mating surfaces.

There are no problems when your Manky Monkey, i just love the whole "thats not working so I`ll do this instead" approach, simple, effective and inspiring.

I'm certainly simple. If I'd worked out in advance what I was going to do, there wouldn't have been a problem to start with. That's because this frame was thrown together very quickly in the early hours of the morning before last year's show. If I could just work on this for the week, (I'm on holiday this week), I could get a fair bit done, but got 2 other projects to work on too. My own trike's still got the front end in bits at the moment. Reckon I'll just be tacking this one together then seam welding everything later. Sorry we didn't get a chance for much of a chat on the MonkeyWorld run -again, TB. Would be good to compare trike building notes next time.

You got a really interesting style going on with this build....its kinda retro but in a quirky way...i like it a lot.My own build is going the same way hopefully.Ive used a nice slim tank, but ive had to cut the back end out of it to miss the air filters on the divvy engine.Like you said earlier, its a pain in the arse trying to weld paper thin steel, but its slowly getting there. The exhaust is another problem with the whole of the bike being really low.Ive had some neat exhaust clamps laser cut and im,e going to make my own full system.I will try and make a 4 into 2 that wraps around the sides of the head, then bring it into a 2 into 1.I will try and post some pics as soon as i start to make some progress, but at the moment, other things are more important. Bathroom needs tiling, fences need erecting and to top it all,a huge patio needs to be put down....all within the space of about 6 weeks.Oh well, thats life.

We started out aiming for a vintage tractor kinda vibe, but it's gradually leaning more towards the Japanese "Zero Customs" bobber style -I think. I've started suffering migraines & had another this morning, which killed any chance of achieving anything until it'd worn off after lunch. Anyone who has them will know the only thing you can do is lie down in a dark room till they pass. So it was back in the shed this afternoon. I drilled the front tank mount then used the hole to mark the wedge underneath before drilling it & welding an M8 nut underneath. Then I tack welded the wedge in place on top of the frame.

That meant I could bolt the tank in place to work out the height of the handlebar risers. I didn't want the bars any taller than the tank, cos I like that slightly hunched back look -the trike, not me. With them cut down to length & scalloped to accept the bars, you can see the M12 nuts I welded in the bottoms & the bolts that hold them to the top yoke. The extra pair of holes in the yoke are the riser mounts FLC drilled when he made the forks. I couldn't use them cos they're too close to the tank, so will blank them off later. No, that's not a smiley face on the yoke.

A quick check to make sure I'd cut them equally so the bars will sit flat & level, (yeah, I know it doesn't look it in the photo, but they are, honest), then I grabbed a length of 1" bore ERW tube, (same size the main frame's made from), & started bending. As a rough guide, I find the straight centre section of the bars needs to be about the width of the front of the tank or wider. Any narrower & you severely limit the amount of steering lock as the bars will hit the tank very quickly. Taz is an inch or so shorter in the arms than me & prefers to sit fairly upright, whereas I like to lean forward slightly when riding, so without her there to test them, I had to guess the bar length. A bit of a compromise between making them narrow enough to be comfortable & for her to reach them on full lock, & wide enough to clear the tank & carb to give as much steering lock as possible.

They look huge don't they. Taz tried them for size though & pronounced them fine. I'll trim the ends off to length where she's holding them, then replace the last 6 inches with some offcuts of old 7/8" handlebar I've saved for the purpose, to step the tube size down to accept standard bike switchgear & grips. Ideally I'd have liked the bars a little lower to follow the angle of the top of the tank, but Taz has to ride this & there's no point building something she won't be comfortable on.

Now we've checked they're O.K, I can unbolt them & fully weld the risers to the bars. Always wear protective headgear when riding your air trike.
