Hello All,

I wonder if any of you could help spread the word with respect to the fact that the Brighton Speed Trials are under threat as Madeira Drive could be closed for good as a motor vehicle ban has been proposed, and the associated Petition against the ban.

The Brighton Speed Trials is considered to be the World’s longest running motor sport event having first run in July 1905, however it, along with other motoring events on Madeira Drive (such as the Veteran car run), are under threat as there is lobbying that wishes to ban all motor vehicles permanently from Madeira Drive.

The Brighton and Hove Motor Club have been organising and running the Speed Trials since 1932, and their facebook page(s) draws attention to the above lobbying and to a campaign that opposes it.

Might I suggest that fellow monkeys and friends be informed of this and invited to sign the petition opposing the closure?

2020 Brighton Speed Trials date is Sat 5th September; however, given the present uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions, it’s impossible to know how things will stand in September.

Thanks

Tony

PS Its by kind invitation of the B&HMC, that the VMCC Sprint Section has been running the bikes at Brighton since the Sprint Section was formed in the early 1980s with the Section’s founders running the bikes from the very early 1970’s, namely Len Cole and Phil Manzano followed by Paul, Pat & Jayne Standing.

I heard about this yesterday. Apparently a heavy handed attempt to limit crowd numbers during the current lock-down.

Update as of 17 July.

Some very good news - there's been a council U-turn with respect to future events on Madeira Drive!

Looks like common sense has prevailed -or at least financial sense. The motoring events must bring in huge amounts of revenue for the town, (I have a friend in the Mini owners club & they pay a fortune to reserve Madeira Drive for their annual London to Brighton run).

Brighton & Hove Motor Club have requested Saturday 4th September 2021 for the 2021 Brighton Speed Trials, so, if you like,  this can be provisionally put in your diary!  Grin

👍 it’s been a very quiet year for sprints and hillclimbs. I live near Wiscombe park, lots of improvements done there though. Fingers crossed for next year 👍

Someone mentioned classic bike hillclimbing at Oliver's Mount to me recently.
Where's that?

Nice!
I've always liked the look of vintage sports bikes. I suppose they're very similar to chops in that they're cut down, simplified & functional.

That's good news, as a ban would have impacted Brightona and the Ace Cafe Brighton Burn Up too. I haven't been to either for a few years but it would be sad to see them end. Plus, the London to Brighton car run is so famous that surely being the end destination is a matter of prestige for Brighton. Though not as famous, the same is true of the Epsom to Brighton Pioneer run.
