Given the present uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic it’s impossible to know how things will stand in September, though we continue to plan for the event.

June 2020 - There's currently lobbying / petition that wishes to ban all motor vehicles permanently from Madeira Drive.

There's also a petition against the ban.

See http://www.mankymonkeymotors.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=17354.0 for further info.

I heard about this on the radio yesterday.
Apparently it's aimed at stopping large gatherings of people during the lock-down, but would have a knock-on effect on the car & bike meets.

Just inform those concerned you wish to organise a mass gathering of people intent on mayhem and destruction with just ONE shared brain cell amongst you and they will bend over backwards to accommodate, the local authorities will even move objects you find offensive giving you more room to ignore social distancing 😂

Update. (as of 17th July)

Unfortunately the 2020 event will not be taking place...……….

However the Good News is there's been a council U-turn with respect to future events on Madeira Drive, so put Saturday 4th September 2021 in your diary for the 2021 Brighton Speed Trials!  Grin

Well, its Saturday 4th Sept 2020 and.................... well, there’s no Speed Trials this year........................

Here are a few videos that may perhaps help the withdrawal symptoms a wee bit.

The first two appear to be rather ‘rare’ videos (YouTube views of below 500 for each video) from 1991 and 2002.
The arches appear painted, the ‘shelf’ open to spectators, and there’s even shots  that include green (now removed) hedging.

1991  (bikes from around 1hr 53 and 2hr 53)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isxUvsGMwRw

2002
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOUGrIxSV9s
1hr 01.35 shows the ex-Denis (‘Jenks’) Jenkinson green Triumph built back in ‘64/’65 following the 1964 Dragfest meetings and ‘restored’ by a certain Oily Bike chap in ‘01/’02.
To the best of my knowledge, Jenks was the only person to have driven and ridden at the ’64 Dragfest events.

These have been posted before, but thought some folk may like to see again

Heard some sad news today...………..

Sat 5th Sept and we should have been on Brighton seafront at the famous Speed Trials, instead, Alex (our chief paddock marshal) had the misfortune of writing an obituary as sad news was received that his close friend and section member Nick Wingrove had finally lost his battle against cancer on Thursday 3rd Sept.

Nick was a quiet chap, who fought his illness with impressive courage, and will be remembered fondly as a fantastic and reliable friend by those close.

Nick had volunteered at the Speed trials, along with many other VMCC events for many decades, usually arriving on his 500cc Vincent Comet.

It was a common sight for Nick along with the late Bruce Floodthain to arrive at Brighton on a pair of Vincents, and spend the day helping the event run well for the motorcycle brigade, especially when getting assembled for the start, always a smile and often a knowing pat on the back from them both, and its great to know this tradition has been kept alive by Alex and his team.

As with all motorsport events, we rely on a huge amount of behind-the-scenes folk for an event to take place, and they most certainly deserve our gratitude.

Photos - Nick helping out inside the 'funnel' at Brighton, whilst Roy's egli-Vincent warms up, and he and Bruce alongside an outfit in the staging area.
